*weary goddamn motherfucking sigh*
Welp, Nintendo finally did it (with one of their flagship console titles, anyway, as this certainly isn't the first time Nintendo has messed around with that sort of thing). It was, of course, only a matter of time. Welcome to the modern video game industry, Nintendo.
(It's actually vaguely refreshing to have something concerning the video game industry to be annoyed with again, rather than having all of my wrath directed solely at SCROTUS Trump all the time.)

They seem to have their multiplayer tied to requiring a smartphone app - and thus a smartphone, as well as having a paid membership subscription similar to PS+/Live Gold.
While I'm not against a paid subscription if I'm going to make use of it, I ain't going out to buy a smartphone for a console. So they better hope they aren't tying all the online stuff, including store access, to their little app.
So they better hope the season pass isn't full of as much ripped out content as I suspect it might be. (The first half of the season pass has a "Cave of Trials" - something that has been in previous games as a side quest, so I consider that ripped out content. The second half has a "brand new story", which I associate with a "Second Quest" idea that they've had in previous games as well.)
I won't be getting a switch in march anyhow. I might not get one until late summer, although I'll probably be buying up the occasional game prior to that, with the Zelda game being first on the list.
We'll see if they manage to ruin the system for me prior to that. I did hear something about a required day 1 firmware update, which can make me pass on the entire console IF the smartphone app thing is required for all online stuff.
