To hell with Photobucket.

I just deleted my Photobucket account pretty much the instant I heard about this, which was just a few minutes ago. I already have all of my images stored on my HDD anyway, so absolutely nothing of value was lost, aside from whatever few images I'd embedded in old LJ/Dreamwidth posts. Oh fucking well, I guess. (EDIT) The biggest loss, as far as I'm concerned, were the screenshots from this post. (/EDIT)

Now I'll need to be looking for a new, non-dogshit image hosting site the next time I need to embed an image. Either that, or I'll just no longer bother to embed images. *shrug*

I remember seeing this back when it started happening. I think my first thought was "Hm. Surprised it took them that long to fuck over their community."

We'll see if they sink or swim after this. One thing's for sure they won't be the Go To Solution of the masses anymore and if anything this creates a power vacuum for the competitors to swoop in on as people dump photobucket like yourself. (I've seen a lot of people saying they're doing likewise and asking people for alternatives.)

For myself, I think I technically had/have a photobucket account. I might have uploaded a single picture to it. Maybe two. All cases would have been back in my multiplayer minecraft public server days where I was reporting some photo evidence of cheaters to admins.

So yeah nothing of value was lost for me either. I can't say I even remember what my account was or the password anyhow. But regardless of any other alternative you pick up you should be aware that they'll just do the same thing eventually when they realize they have all these millions of users and they could be making soooo much more money if they found a way to exploit'em.

I think photobucket would have better served themselves if they just appended a small ad to the images being served as hotlinks, but eh. I guess 399 dollar "ransom" schemes are more profitable. I can certainly see how people like to compare the change to ransomware schemes though.
