Since I haven't mentioned it yet, I will mention it. A few weeks ago, I got my hands on an old (new to me) Samsung Galaxy S3 that my sister had been using at work and which they were apparently going to get rid of or replace or some such thing, so they just gave the old one to her. And she gave it to me. I can use it for pretty much everything a smartphone can do *except* use it as an actual cellphone, i.e. I can't make calls or send texts or anything like that, but the WiFi connectivity and Google Play store and such work just fine. In other words, yeah, I've finally joined the 21st century and have a smartphone now. Mostly.
So.
What was the first thing I did with it (after factory resetting it and getting the WiFi stuff actually working and such)? I downloaded that My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic game that I was mocking six years ago. >_> https://kane-magus.dreamwidth.org/541912.html
And... it's okay. Pretty cool, I guess, for a phone game. Timers galore, and a multitude of invitations for me to spend real money which I have been utterly ignoring and will continue to utterly ignore, but aside from that, it's all right. I'm still playing it off and on, at least, which is more than I can say for most of the other games I'd downloaded and tried since getting the phone. (That said, I would *still* buy the hell out of a *proper* *real* video game in the MLP:FiM setting.)
(EDIT) I rewatched the video in the above linked Dreamwidth post, and while the game still looks mostly similar to what was shown there, there's a fair bit more to it now than there was back then, as well, so that's something. They don't even show off any of the storyline quests in the video, of which there are a ton in the game as of now. (Also, if Discord and Starlight Glimmer and the Great and Powerful Trixie are just, you know, hanging out together and invading Changling country and such on the actual show, the same way they do in this game, then... uh, maybe I need to get back into watching the show again, as well. >_>;) (/EDIT)
I've also downloaded two (2) different Sims games for it, which are pretty similar to the MLP game, except it's The Sims instead of MLP (i.e. timers galore and lots of invitations to spend real world money). They're all right too, I guess. The Sims Freeplay and The Sims Mobile. I've spent more time on the former, even though it appears to be a much older game.
I've tried a few clicker games (or I guess you'd call them "tapper" or "swiper" games?) and they were cool for a little bit, but I quickly tired of them. Hooked Inc, was the one I stuck with the longest before finally deleting it a few days ago.
And I've downloaded a Final Fantasy game (FF Brave Exvius) and a Kingdom Hearts game (KH Union χ[Cross]), but, for whatever reasons, as of yet I haven't bothered to even try them. I dunno. *shrug*
The only other game so far that I haven't just tried and then fairly quickly deleted is one called Ankora. This one, at least of the ones I've tried so far, feels the most like a bona fide game to me. Almost no timers (the only timers I've seen are for the mines) and, as far as I've seen, no required viewing of video ads, though it does pop up the occasional tiny button in the corner to watch an ad in exchange for in-game items.
So, speaking of ads. Here is one thing I will say about in-game video ads for smartphone games. Games that *force* you to watch video advertisements every five minutes or so suck shit and can die and go to hell as far as I care, and I've deleted the ones I've tried that do that shit. However... games that give you *optional* incentives to watch a video advertisement in exchange for in-game goodies? I seem to be perfectly okay with that, and I encourage the practice. Hell, it even got me to download a few of the other games that I probably wouldn't have tried otherwise (though most of them were the ones I ended up deleting fairly quickly anyway). As with Ankora above, the MLP game and the two Sims games are of the latter type, with optional ads in exchange for in-game stuff. The main problem I have with the in-game video advertisements (forced or optional) is that they tend to show the same. goddamn. ad. over. and. over. and. over. again.
