So, one day, a game called Starcraft was made. In this game, there was a map called "Aeon of Strife." Modders of another game called Warcraft III made a mod for that game called "Defense of the Ancients," that was derivative of Starcraft's "Aeon of Strife" map.

Then, everyone jumped on the bandwagon. Now you have Dota 2 and League of Legends and all that other asinine, banal bullshit that I don't care about except to mock it.

Then, in Dota 2, some modders made a mod called "Auto Chess," which everyone and their brother's pet dachshund is apparently playing.

Then, everyone jumped on the bandwagon. Now you have LoL "Teamfight Tactics" and Dota Underlords (which was the incitation for the writing of this post, because it showed up in my Steam discovery queue today) and all the other copycat crap that's certain to follow.

I can't wait to see what the next derivative of a derivative of a derivative of a derivative comes along and takes everyone by storm will be. </sarcasm>

But then, to be fair, I never gave a single fucking shit about anything past the original Starcraft and Warcraft games to begin with, so what do I know. I'm just an old dinosaur, I guess. And besides, this sort of thing isn't limited to just the above. Copycat-ism is a huge thing with the video game industry[1] (and, hell, all forms of entertainment media, for that matter). Original concepts are few and far between, and then, when they do rarely crop up, they are then, of course, copycat-ed to death.

[1] - E.g. all the recent copycat card battle games and all the recent copycat battle royale games and so on and so forth.
