"The PewDiePipeline: how edgy humor leads to violence"

"PewDiePipeline 2: How to Shut it Down"

These videos were posted in a comment under that Wil Wheaton Facebook post I mentioned previously.

(EDIT) Mr. Wheaton has, sadly, deleted his original post, because it became overinfested with MAGAt trolls and "bro army" asshats. Here is his follow up post explaining why he did so. I wish he hadn't done it, but I can understand his reasons why. (/EDIT)

Wil Wheaton wrote a post over on Facebook, talking about the idiocy of the Facebook suggestions algorithm, in which he posted a screenshot of a FB suggestion of a PewDiePie fan page and said:

"Hi Facebook. On the one hand, I'm heartened to discover that you know so little about me, your algorithms seem to think that I want to follow a racist, piece of shit bigot.

"On the other hand, fuck you for recommending and providing a platform for this racist, piece of shit bigot."

Here is my response, plus comments:

Just gonna copy/paste from Facebook (which mostly just links back to here, so whatever):

Initial post:

So Pewdiepie is currently trending on Twitter because he said a racist slur during a Twitch stream. That tells you something about Twitter, I guess.

As far as this particular Pewdiepie bullshit goes, I think Scalzi said it best, so I'll just link to his tweet here:

https://twitter.com/scalzi/status/906981444937011200

As for Pewdiepie in general, I've pretty much already said far more than I'd have thought I'd ever need to say about this asshole, so I'll just link to that as well:

Also, this: https://www.polygon.com/2017/9/10/16285188/pewdie-pie-racist-slur-firewatch-retaliation-dmca

All the luck and good fortune to you, Mr. Vanaman.

Second follow-up comment:

Also also, this: https://twitter.com/AnneWheaton/status/906997271241277440

Bwahahaha, fuck Pewdiepie.

(EDIT)

Third follow-up comment:

Oh, and for all the morons trying to claim something along the lines of "Well, if Pewds had just said 'nigga' instead of hard-R 'nigger,' it would've been fine" or whatever nonsense as that... nope, sorry, that's not how it works, either.

A white dude like Felix Kjellberg does not get to throw out any variation of that word to an audience of thousands without consequences.

And no, once again, this is not a fucking "free speech" issue. Here, have that xkcd explaining this yet again: https://xkcd.com/1357/

Twitter is fucking asinine. I mean, don't get me wrong, PewDiePie himself is still pretty fucking asinine, too, but in this case, at least, he kind of has a point, which he does finally get to making, in his aggravating, asinine, PewDiePie way. But then, the reason the whole thing got started in the first place was due to PewDiePie trying (and failing, as usual) to be funny. I kind of almost don't blame Twitter for suspending him, just on principle.

Undertale just got released on GOG.com.

Whether a given thing (e.g. Undertale, My Little Pony, Insane Clown Posse, Twilight, PewDiePie[1], etc.) is or is not terrible, it's often the fan reaction (and, more accurately, the anti-fan reaction) that ends up greatly eclipsing the thing itself in sheer annoying, disgusting terribleness. Yes, fans can get pretty stupid when somebody shows up and shits all over the thing they like, but then some people that hate a thing get just as stupid when people try to defend the thing they are shitting on.

[1] - To be fair, I've said in the past that I think PewDiePie's fans are just as terrible as PewDiePie himself is, if not more so, but that is based solely on hearsay third hand bullshit. I, myself, have never personally had any interactions with fans of PewDiePie, positive or negative or neutral, outside of seeing a bunch of tiresome "*brofist*" comments or whatever all over the Internet.[2] That said, I still think PewDiePie himself is aural diarrhea of the worst sort, but I haven't had any problems with his fanbase, yet, anyway.

[2] - On a related topic, even I got sick of all the "/) *brohoof* (\" comments that bronies would similarly leave all over the place, so in that sense at least, I can see why some people might think that bronies are terrible.

I have written posts about this guy before, so I guess I should link back to them here. Rather than go into all of that shit again, all I'll say here is, to repeat the subject line, I truly don't get why this dude is so fucking popular. He is, somehow, once again the most subscribed channel on Youtube. That seems to be his only claim to "fame."

If Felix Kjellberg deserves a spot on something like the Today show or whatever, then so do James Rolfe, Mike Matei, and Brendan Castner. So do Matt Kowalewski, Pat Boivin, Woolie Madden, and Liam Allen-Miller. So does Joe Vargas. So does Noah Antwiler. And so do so many other, far better LPers than PewDiePie.

I just don't. I don't even.

(Not that appearing on TV with fucking Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb is all that great an honor in the first place, mind you.)

This... just... I don't... what is this I don't even

Really, that's ridiculous. I still seriously can't fathom how and why this schmuck got so damned popular.

PewDiePie came up the other day as a topic of conversation. At the time, I said that I didn't like him or was, at best, apathetic about him.

Well, I decided to give him another shot, as I kind of didn't feel like it was fair for me to judge him based on just the one and a quarter half-remembered videos I watched of his a year or so ago. So I went to his channel and right there on his front page was a video titled "A Funny Montage." I assumed that this was intended to be a sort of "Best of PewDiePie" video, so I figured that would probably be the best place to start.

This is that video:

I managed to last maybe two minutes into that (up to the Slender thing where he's making the asinine faces while he's zooming in and out on the Slender Man's crotch) before I just had to close the tab and sigh wearily, entirely unamused. So, yeah, I gave him another fair chance to impress me, or at least to not aggravate me, and well... let's say that PewDiePie is definitely not for me and just leave it at that, okay? This will be the last post I make about him, until and unless he ever does something that's actually noteworthy.

(EDIT)

Also this:

PewDiePie is the most subscribed channel on Youtube right now. Think about that. Just let it sink in. *facepalm* The only reason I could stomach that video at all was thanks to the MST3K-like reactions in the upper corner (which are parodying PewDiePie himself when he does that in his own videos).

To be fair, he has apparently toned down the rape jokes since that video was made, but still... the shrieking like a banshee thing is pretty terrible, regardless.

(/EDIT)

(EDIT 2)

And this is a video mocking many of the comments in response to the above "Adults React to PewDiePie" video:

Yeah, that sounds about like what I would have expected to be the response.

Between the full bundle currently being the Humble Origin Bundle (i.e. a bunch of EA games) and the weekly bundle being the "picked by Pewdiepie" bundle, Humble Bumble is just going all to shit lately, it seems.

The EA bundle sounds great in theory, especially given that EA is supposedly giving their share entirely to charity (for a huge tax write-off, I'm sure), but it's all just A) a PR stunt to try to get back into gamers' good books (which, sadly, seems to be working) and B) a ploy to get a bunch more people to install Origin who otherwise probably wouldn't have (which, sadly, also seems to be working since I've seen a lot of people saying that they are going to install it for this). Thing is, the Origin servers are apparently broken for people trying to redeem the codes for this stuff. On the other hand, the equivalent Steam codes (for the games that aren't exclusive to Origin entirely) are apparently working just fine. Amusing, that. In any event, this is just EA exploiting the once honorable Humble Bundle brand for their own ends, and people are sucking it down like it's kool-aid.

As for Pewdiepie... he's just some schmo who does shitty Let's Plays of horror games on Youtube (or, at least, what little I was able to stomach of the few I tried to watch were rather shitty, anyway), so I have no idea why he's apparently Big Nameā„¢ enough to be getting a Bundle, really. I mean, if it were a bundle of games picked by Matt and Pat of the Two Best Friends Play series, that I could understand since they're awesome, but Pewdiepie...? *shrug* With that said, I've played Botanicula, McPixel, and Amnesia, and they're all pretty cool, so I have to give him credit in that he has good taste in games on those counts, at least. The other two don't look all that interesting to me, though.
