I have written posts about this guy before, so I guess I should link back to them here. Rather than go into all of that shit again, all I'll say here is, to repeat the subject line, I truly don't get why this dude is so fucking popular. He is, somehow, once again the most subscribed channel on Youtube. That seems to be his only claim to "fame."

If Felix Kjellberg deserves a spot on something like the Today show or whatever, then so do James Rolfe, Mike Matei, and Brendan Castner. So do Matt Kowalewski, Pat Boivin, Woolie Madden, and Liam Allen-Miller. So does Joe Vargas. So does Noah Antwiler. And so do so many other, far better LPers than PewDiePie.

I just don't. I don't even.

(Not that appearing on TV with fucking Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb is all that great an honor in the first place, mind you.)

It's worth noting at this point he's likely getting random new subscribers simply because youtube tends to default to showing his videos on their front page as "you may also like" type of things. Why? Because he has a few dozen million subscribers. So at this point it's self-feeding itself.

And that's basically the only reason he's on the Today show I think. Simply because he makes, literally, millions posting inane shit on youtube. Which is why people with, in our opinions at least, better videos such as Joe Vargas will likely not appear on the Today show any time soon.

That's pretty much the case, yeah. Game Theory's theory about why he became so popular in the first place is similar. I linked to that video in a comment (http://kane-magus.livejournal.com/663091.html?thread=592179#t592179) on one of my older posts about this guy, but I'll just embed it here as well:

Basically, they claim that the reason he became so popular is indeed mainly because of Youtube's soulless algorithms overly promoting his videos, for various reasons, including because he's apparently "international" or whatever.

That, and I guess far too many people just think it's funny to watch a grown-ass man shriek like a baby in a blender? Especially since the main reason he was on the Today show in the first place seemed to be to promote his new show (http://www.donotlink.com/i8v8).

*shrug + headshake*

Like I said, I absolutely do not get it. The extremely few times that I've tried watching a PewDiePie video, it made fingernails on chalkboard sound dulcet in comparison.

Oh, and he was apparently on Conan O'Brien's show (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B_cO-k2DAFw) recently as well.

*facepalm + weary sigh*

By that I mean, I still don't get why this dude is so popular, even with the explanation of the Youtube robots helping him and then it all just feeding on itself. As Game Theory said, no algorithms in the world would save his channel unless people actually liked him (for whatever reasons that are unfathomable to me).

But... anyway... meh... if people want to like this guy, whatever. It's no harm to me, I suppose. To each his own, I guess? It'd be better for everyone involved if his fanbase wasn't even more obnoxious and terrible than even PewDiePie himself is, but still... meh... whatever.
