A post on John Scalzi's website.
And here is the thing J.K. Rowling recently wrote (which I have not read in its entirety, and which I'm not sure I want to fully read, because the amount I have skimmed through of it appears to be pretty wrongheaded[1], but then, I'm just a heterosexual, cis, white male, so what the hell do I know), which at least partially inspired the above-linked post of Mr. Scalzi (also a heterosexual, cis, white male, as he notes).
[1] - It appears to be a long-winded "oh woe is me and my sisters, who merely want to continue being transphobic because of reasons, that's all, why can't we just be publicly transphobic in peace, but we can't because we're afraid we'll be criticized and ostracized, please stop being so mean to us" diatribe. Of course, as always, anyone who sends death/rape threats to people, for any reason, can just fuck right off forever, as far as I'm concerned. There are always going to be assholes on any side of any issue, who like to do asshole-type things, and that is unfortunate. However, with that said, I'm not so much concerned if you get excoriated or banned or potentially have your career threatened or whatever as a direct result of you being a public asshole, though. Maybe you should consider not being a public asshole (whether you want to be a transphobic public asshole, a racist public asshole, a Trump-supporting public asshole, or whatever type of public asshole), regardless of how much you seem to really, really want to continue being a public asshole, and maybe most of the negativity surrounding you will disperse. But then, for some of you, it may be a case of too little, too late. You've already shown too much of your true, public asshole colors to go back now. And too many of you double down on your public asshole-type behavior in response to what the worst people say in response to your public asshole-type behavior, even when those people are even bigger public assholes than you are (like, say, the type who think sending death/rape threats is an okay thing to do), and as a result, you just opt to completely ignore the more well-meaning people who also heartily disapprove of your public asshole-type behavior, and you lump them in with the worse public asshole-type people. Just because a worse public asshole treats you like shit for your own public asshole-type behavior, you shouldn't take that as an excuse or a rationalization or a justification to continue being a public asshole yourself. Your choices are to either go whole hog, throw caution to the wind, and just fully embrace being a public asshole, or you can stop being a public asshole, if the criticism you get for being a public asshole bothers you too much. You can't have your cake and eat it, too. (You can be a private asshole all you want to be. Just stop getting all weepy when you get castigated for being an asshole in public.)[2]
[2] - With all of that said, I also fully acknowledge that sometimes the "good guys" can go completely overboard, too, as I've seen in the past. I'm not sure that's the case here, though.
