"If you think the Super Nintendo is vintage, we have bad news."
Glorious.
Digital.
Future.
God.
Dammit.
Fuck.
Yeah, this is ancient news by Internet standards at this point, I guess. Still, it's just a reminder that the glorious digital future is neither glorious nor the future.
This doesn't affect me directly, because I never had either a 3DS (released in 2011) or a Wii U (released in 2012), and at this point I never will. However, this does make my interest in possibly owning any other current or future Nintendo consoles at some point, such as the Switch, continue to greatly wane, because the Switch (released in 2017) itself will become similarly "vintage" by these standards in probably less than a decade, too.

Date: 2023-10-07 01:57 am (UTC)From:So I'll technically not have to worry about needing to re-download anything in theory at least. That'll be more of a problem with the PS3/PS4 though given the problem they have with bricking all digital media if the system ever loses it's internal battery power and can't keep the date. (Would need to connect to PSN to reset it and get the digital stuff working again, but if Sony tries (again) to axe off access to PSN for those consoles...)
I suppose I should probably try to focus my energy on playing and completing anything on the PS3/PS4 sooner than later. Also want to try to play through the 360 titles I have, assuming it even still works (haven't turned it on in over a decade...)
In the 360's case, I'd probably end up selling the console and games after I'm done with it.
Probably ironically I'd be more interested in keeping the original xbox instead of the 360 when it comes down to it. Although that console was essentially the beginning of the end for consoles as a whole. (Online-PC-in-a-box)

Okay, yeah, apparently it's still online (for now), but you have to jump through hoops if you want to actually buy anything on there anymore. As in, apparently they don't even accept credit cards or stuff like that anymore and require you to buy gift cards and use those to add money to the online wallet or whatever. So... I guess Sony is still better than Nintendo in this regard, but only barely. Just yet another example of the glorious digital future. *weary sigh*
