They say that movies based on video games are generally crap, which is true in most cases.

However, from what I can tell, cartoons based on video games appear to be much, much more horrible. The American made ones are, at least. Or, in the case of Street Fighter, cartoons based on movies based on video games (given that Sawada was in it and all).

Some examples:
-- Street Fighter
-- Mortal Kombat
-- Darkstalkers
-- Double Dragon
-- Mega Man
-- Sonic the Hedgehog (Not to be confused with the SatAM version, which was considerably less sucky)
-- Legend of Zelda (though it's still worlds better than that CDi crap)
-- Super Mario Bros
-- and the big one, Captain N
-- not to mention the blatant Captain N ripoff The Power Team.

(EDIT)

And the vast majority of the above links have been rendered null due to copyright infringement crap. *weary sigh* Look, giant music/video/whatever companies, someone uploading a Youtube video of your crap is NOT going to hurt your profit margins in any way, so please lighten the fuck up. Seriously.

(EDIT 2)

I've since replaced those with generic links to Youtube searches for the cartoons in question. It's not as good as the actual videos to which I'd originally linked, but I figure that will be less like to become dead links at some point in the future.

(/EDIT 2)

(EDIT 3)

Actually, I found all those things again and then some. Even better is that they were originally created by Matt of Two Best Friends Play, a fact of which I was unaware until recently (i.e. 2014). I've once again replaced most of the above links with ones that go to the Super Best Friends Play website versions. The ones that I couldn't find on there still have the Youtube search links.

(/EDIT 3)

(EDIT 4)

And now most of those links are lost to the ether as well, so fuck it. *weary sigh*

(/EDIT 4)

(/EDIT)

Of these, outside of YouTube I've only actually seen Mario, Zelda, Sonic (both version), Captain N, a bit of the Power Team, and a bit of Double Dragon. For the span of a couple weeks when I was a kid I... actually used to get up at around 5:00am on Sundays just to watch that Double Dragon crap because that was the only time they aired it... oh man...

Nostalgia only goes so far...

Wikipedia has a list.

While I agree with most of it, I did find the Megaman cartoon kinda fun at times. Even if it was corny as well. Eh.

Mind you, this is probably because the only thing I had to compare it to at the time was the mega man in Captain N. ^^;

For what it's worth, I haven't actually seen any of the Megaman cartoon at all except for that clips thing I posted above, which was specifically edited to make it look as dumb as possible.

But I kind of feel the same way about the Super Mario Brothers Super Show, which I did watch a lot as a kid, in that I don't think it was too bad. But you have to admit that pretty much all of those, including Megaman and Mario, are horribly "late 80s/early 90s" cheesy, if not actually horrible.

Though come to think of it, in the case of Mario, I guess the cartoon was actually better than the movie. At least it was more true to the games than the movie was, anyway.

(And as far as Zelda goes back when I was a kid, when Link showed (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fBcW4E5RfZ4) up (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yDqA-qszNuY) on (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bYBSnrAQmbE) Captain N, I thought that was about the most badass thing ever. But yeah, watching it now is kind of eeeeeeehhhhh... And I do have to say that I don't remember Gameboy being that bad when I was a kid, but watching him now is about as fun as getting teeth drilled.)

Oh, and that Gutsman's Ass (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z8IiJk4Imds) thing. I've seen that as well. >_>

The general jist of the series was essentially the same as most shows back then. You had the stable crew (wily, protoman, gutsman and cutsman on the bad side) along with one or two random other evil robots from the TV show. In one show, probably the first, megaman absorbed gutsman and cutsman's powers. In all the other shows tho he never touched them, always absorbing the "guest" bad guy's weapon to finish everything up.

If it had more continuity between episodes, I'd probably have liked the series a lot more. That was one of the things I liked about the Conan show back in the day, even tho I didn't think too much of the animation itself. Having all the shows forming pretty much one big story was a major plus.

The Megaman cartoon wasn't *that* bad. I mean, yeah, it was cheesey, but I would not characterize it as "horrible." I will say, though, that the upside of the Megaman and Street Fighter cartoons was that they had Scott McNeil doing a voice in each of them. (If you listen carefully, you will find thatt they are actually the *same* voice.)

Wow that guy's been in a lot (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scott_McNeil#Animation_roles)... including literally half of the ones I listed above. ^^;
