CPU overheating
Feb. 3rd, 2015 04:44 pmMy computer started acting funny a couple days ago (wasn't letting me run programs and such) and when I tried to reboot, first it didn't want to complete the shutdown process, and second, after I manually restarted it, it didn't want to boot into Windows at all (including Safe Mode). I was alarmed at first, until it finally popped up a BIOS warning about the CPU temperature being too high, after about the fourth or fifth attempt at rebooting. While still alarming, it was at least a definite thing that I could probably fairly easily deal with (since I've done it before), rather than some nebulous thing.
And so, the next morning when I tried to turn it on again, it booted right up, which made sense, given that it'd had all night to cool down again, so I installed a CPU fan monitor (which at the time was showing it running at around 55°C/131°F just after I turned it on, which was still a bit too high) and ordered some Arctic Silver 5 to put on the CPU, before turning it off again for good.
The really annoying thing is that I'd already bought some of that stuff a few years ago, when this happened before, and I thought that I'd brought it with me when I moved back to NC from WA, but apparently not, since otherwise I'd have had it fixed yesterday. Anyway, it arrived via UPS about an hour ago, and I cleaned the old, dusty, brittle thermal paste off of the CPU and fan (and blew about three tons of dust out of the fan and heatsink), spread on some of the new, and reattached the fan. Now, the computer seems to be running okay again, and the CPU is currently running at around 25°C-40°C/77°F-104°F. I'll be keeping a closer eye on it from now on, though, that's for sure.
I thought I'd made a post about this here when it happened before, but apparently not. I guess I'd just discussed it with
owsf2000 in IRC or something, without actually posting about it.
