The Island

Here is a story that was generated entirely by NovelAI. (Oh, by the way, since I just realized that I've only mentioned it on Twitter and haven't mentioned it here yet, I've started using NovelAI, at the $10/month level. So far, it seems at least as good as the Griffin model of AI Dungeon, with the added bonus of no censorship and no spying on what you write [or so the creators claim, anyway].)

The only part of this story that I wrote was the first line, which I have bolded and italicized below. Everything else was generated by the AI itself. For the most part, I let it do whatever it wanted. The only times I pressed the "Retry" button was when the AI tried to introduce other characters into the story, which was actually pretty rare. The only other thing I did was that I copied the same first line into the "Author's Note" field, which meant it would be kept in context by the AI. As far as the copy/pasting from NovelAI to this post goes, the only other edits I made besides bolding and italicizing the first line was adding a few "(&)nbsp(;)"s (without the parentheses, of course) at the beginning of each paragraph, since those got lost in the copy/paste.

I figured that the final line it produced there was as good a stopping point as any.

I like how NovelAI handles potential overuse better, too. With AI Dungeon, you have the energy bar, and when that's empty, that's it. You're done. You have to stop and wait for it to fill back up before you can continue.

With NovelAI, though, there are priority tiers. Once you use a given number of actions, you get bumped down, until eventually you're at tier 0. That means that you'll potentially have a longer wait time for a response from the AI, but at least you can still use it.

Also, if nothing else, there seems to be a much higher "start to skeevy shit" ratio with NovelAI than there is with AI Dungeon. So far, NovelAI hasn't once tried to randomly steer me into a porn-type scenario, unlike AI Dungeon. ¬_¬

In any case, the $10 lasts for a month, so I have at least that long to mess with it before deciding whether I'll stick with it or not.

I suppose the only "downside" is that NovelAI, unlike AI Dungeon, doesn't have a free subscription, meaning that if you want to even just try it out, you'll have to scrape up at least $10. That may change in the future, though, from what I understand.

On the other hand, there's the added benefit of NovelAI not spying on you and randomly censoring stuff and potentially banning you for asinine, innocuous reasons due to the AI mistakenly thinking you're doing child porn or whatever, again unlike AI Dungeon. (So far, anyway.)
