This weekend, on GOG.com, you can get the entire Gabriel Knight series for $12.57 (and even when the whole thing isn't on sale, it's still just $17.97 total for all three games). If I didn't already have all three games in the series, I'd be all over this. I think the Gabriel Knight series, for me, is at the very least tied with Quest for Glory as my favorite of the Sierra adventure games. (EDIT) For what it's worth, sometime in the years since making this post, I went ahead and bought all three Gabriel Knight games on GOG anyway (along with the Quest for Glory series, for that matter). (/EDIT)
A quick synopsis of each one:
Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers: Gabriel (voiced in this game by Tim Curry) is the owner of a used bookstore in New Orleans who is investigating the "Voodoo Murders" with the help of his assistant Grace Nakimura (voiced by Leah Remini) and his friend Detective Mosely (voiced by Mark Hamill). At first, he's just doing it because he's writing a book about it, but as the game progresses the whole thing becomes more personal for him.
The Beast Within: A Gabriel Knight Mystery (aka Gabriel Knight 2): Now living in Germany after the events of the first game, Gabriel (this time played by Dean Erickson, and yes that's "played" and not "voiced" this time, because the second game is a FMV game, and a surprisingly good one at that, given how much FMV games tended to suck) is asked by the family of a small girl to investigate the death of the girl at the hands of a wolf, which the family believes was a werewolf. The game alternates back and forth between playing Gabriel and Grace (played by Joanne Takahashi) as they investigate.
Gabriel Knight 3: Blood of the Sacred, Blood of the Damned: This time, Gabriel (once again voiced by Tim Curry) and Grace (voiced this time by Charity James) wind up in France, investigating the kidnapping of a young boy. Mosely (voiced by Dean Thomas) shows up, claiming to just be on vacation. The story of this one is somewhat similar to The Da Vinci Code (though GK3 predates Da Vinci Code by 3 or 4 years), except with more vampires. Admittedly, I liked this one the least of the three, but it's still very good, I think. Fair warning, though: this game ends on a bit of a cliffhanger, which was never resolved because the next intended game didn't get made, which is a big part of the reason it's my least favorite of the series.
By the way, if you enjoyed the Gabriel Knight games, I would also like to recommend the Ben Jordan: Paranormal Investigator freeware series as well, especially from the 4th game onward, which is when Simon and Alice first show up. The second game is probably the weakest in the series (though there's apparently a "deluxe" version of it that wasn't available back when I first played through the series... huh, I'll have to look into that). Anyway, it's very "Gabriel Knight"-ish, and I like it, and you can't beat the price.
