Do you like to be scared? Do you enjoy creepy things? Do you read horror stories or watch horror movies or play horror video games?
If you answered yes to any of those, then you'll probably like the Slender Man. Or at least the stories about the Slender Man, anyway.
What is the Slender Man? Rather than even beginning to try to answer that, I'm just going to post links to some other places that explain it way better than I could.
-- TV Tropes. (That's where I first heard about it, same as with many other things.)
-- Know Your Meme.
Here are a few vlogs/blogs specific to the Mythos (informational, as opposed to "in-universe" ...for the most part):
--Slenderbloggins. Slenderbloggins. (Note the two links there. It started on wordpress and then moved to its own site. This one started to blur the line between being an informational blog and one of the actual story blogs, but it eventually pulled back from that and went back to being a purely informational blog. At least for now, anyway.)
-- Encyclopedia Slenderia. (I've actually only just started to read through this one, but it seems pretty cool so far. I found out about it through Slenderbloggins.)
-- compileTRUTH (A series of Youtube videos that has summaries of some of the stuff listed below and others. I like the format, and the music is suitably creepy. It also has a few elements of being an actual story vlog itself as well, though I'd personally prefer it just stick with the informational stuff.)
And now for the actual story stuff.
Here is the origin of the Slender Man.
-- Something Awful "Create Paranormal Images" thread. There's a lot of other stuff there, but the first instance of Slender Man is found in this post by Victor Surge.
Vlogs that I've watched (in the order that I watched them):
-- Marble Hornets/totheark (Marble Hornets is pretty much the first major Slender Man related thing to hit the Internet, after the original Something Awful thread. Note: totheark posts video responses to various MH vids, starting with Entry #9, so you'd probably want to wait until you got to that point in the main MH series before watching them, not that it will really help the totheark videos make any more sense...)
-- EverymanHYBRID (To follow this one, you'll definitely want to pay attention to their wiki, since there's other stuff than just the Youtube videos.)
-- TribeTwelve (This one starts off seeming like a blatant Marble Hornets rip-off, and it kind of is a blatant Marble Hornets rip-off, but I still liked it and it diverges a little bit as it goes along.)
Blogs that I've read (in the order that I've read them):
-- H(a)unting. (While this is indeed the first one that I read through myself, I really would not recommend that it be your first exposure to Slenderblogs. Or, if you do, just go in knowing that it's very atypical of the genre. Many complain that Sandra is a bit of a Mary Sue-ish character, and I can totally see why. More importantly, many really don't like how the Slender Man himself is portrayed in this blog. I still liked it, even so, but YMMV.)
-- The Tutorial. (This one is kinda sorta a "How To" for surviving the Slender Man. It hasn't updated since December though, so I think M might have finally been caught. ¬_¬)
-- Seeking Truth / The Mystic (These two are both written by the same guy and The Mystic is a direct "sequel" of sorts to Seeking Truth, so read Seeking Truth first. Of the few that I've completely read through so far, this is probably my favorite.)
--Just Another Fool (EDIT) New link since the original was deleted. (/EDIT) (Honestly, this should probably be the first Slenderblog that you read, as it was one of the first Slender Man related things to hit the Internet, after Marble Hornets and the original Something Awful thread. Unfortunately, I couldn't really get into it, and kind of lost interest after Josh took over the blog. Though most would probably say that that's when it was actually starting to get good.)
Note that the stories contained in these blogs often extend down into the comments as well, so don't neglect those, even though your usual assortment of trolls and such can be found there as well, of course. That said, some of the "trolls" are what they call proxies/hollowed/agents/etc. and are actually part of the story. On the other hand, some are just lame attempts at gamejacks. Oh, that said, I should also explain what an ARG is. (Or, rather, I'll just let Professor Wikipedia there explain it. *nods sagely*) Many of the Slender Man things are ARGs, such as EverymanHYBRID for example. I don't actively participate in any of them myself though, so most of that stuff is kind of lost on me.
There is a very large number of other Slenderblogs (and Youtubes and twitters and such) in existence, some of which have sadly been deleted and lost to the ether. There's no way I'll ever read them all (both through lack of time and due to the fact that I'll probably eventually just get tired of the whole Slender Man thing altogether) and I have absolutely no idea which one I want to read next (as noted above, I'm currently reading through Encyclopedia Slenderia).
This will most likely be the only post I make about this, unless I read or watch something particularly interesting. I have no intention of starting my own Slenderblog. I don't really have the time or inclination to do so. On the vague off-chance that I did decide to do one at some point, it certainly wouldn't be here on my personal LJ. Mostly, I just wanted to share, because I find the whole thing to be rather interesting.
Oh, and here are Splendorman and Concrete Giraffes.
Lastly, because I'm weird like that, I leave you with a hypothetical situation: Who would win in a four-way free-for-all fight between the Slender Man, Cabadath (or substitute endgame Dacabe for Cabadath, if you so desire), the Pyramid Head, and Nyarlathotep?
