Wow, DarkHarvest00 has updated for the first time in 4 years, apparently with the intent to finally wrap things up. So... after all these years, this is pretty much the last Slender Man vlog thing I was following, and the last to actually get a conclusion, after Marble Hornets and EverymanHYBRID.

(I mean, unless Adam Rosner also comes back and finishes TribeTwelve, anyway. But even if he did, I most likely wouldn't bother to watch it, because fuck Adam Rosner. [Who, ostensibly, is a fucking eye doctor now or some shit, wtaf?])

...but what's really missing from Steam is a "Backrooms" or "Roomslike" or some similar tag, so that I can just blanket Ignore that entire genre and (hopefully) prevent all those shitty games from showing up in every other Discovery Queue I go through. Because, unlike with the "Roguelike" and "Soulslike" tags, only once have I seen a "Backrooms" game that I had any interest at all in actually trying. Admittedly, I did try the first one I ever saw, because it happened to be available for free, and that was, in fact, the first time I ever heard of the "Backrooms" at all. The game wasn't anything to write home about. Hell if I could tell you which one of the dozens in that list there it was, though. (With that list sorted by release date, I'd guess that it was probably this one.) Then I saw a second one and was like "Huh, they made another one?" And then I saw a third one and was like "Huh, this again?" Fast forward to now and multiple dozens of games later...

Honestly, I'm not saying that the very concept of the "Backrooms" is innately bad. It's not. It was actually vaguely interesting, the first time I heard about it, a few years ago, even if the one game of it that I tried was rather lackluster. I'm just saying that it has since been driven into the ground to the point of utter banality, similar to other such things like the Slender Man Mythos and the SCP Foundation[1] and whatever else that came before it. (And, hell, just from looking at my "slender man" tag now, I see that this isn't even the first time, a little over a week shy of exactly one year ago now, that I've complained about this "Backrooms" shit, even making the comparison to Slender Man there, same as here.)

[1] - Seriously, there is even a goddamned SCP "dating sim" now.

Because in like every second or third Discovery Queue I've gone through on Steam in the past few months, there has been at least one The Backrooms game on it. Sort of like how there were so many Slender Man games, or at least Slender Man-inspired games, showing up on there a few years ago.

(EDIT) Oh, as a bit of a tangent, I just learned today that apparently the creator of TribeTwelve was outed back in 2020 as a transphobic pedophile who was also into bestiality or some shit? So... yeah. At the very least, I guess that explains why that particular Slender Man vlog series has been dead for so long. Yeesh. o_O (/EDIT)

Nerd Shitâ„¢ like this is why Wil Wheaton is awesome.

Also, I've never heard of analog horror until this post, either.

Same deal as before. Lots of Star Trek Q-related dreams this time, for whatever reason. Also, lots more dreams in which I was female. *shrug*

Behind cut for obvious reasons. )
kane_magus: (Default)
First one in a while. While I have been writing in my normal pencil and paper journal quite a bit lately about dreams I've had, I haven't written anything in my bona fide dream journal in several months. Until this morning, anyway. Also, in this here online journal, I have apparently only written one entry about the actual dream journal, even though I've written several entries pertaining to the dreams I recorded in the pencil and paper journal (though I'm hugely behind on that, and probably unlikely at this point to ever get caught up).

This entry, here, is about the actual dream journal. Basically, I'm going to transcribe all of the dreams I've written in that thing since that previous post. So, I left off in... 2009 holy shit really? That's the year I started the damn thing. Yeah, this might take a while. >_>; I'll try to keep the same format from the previous post here as well. Note, again, that these are from the actual dream journal, written immediately after waking up, so unlike (most of) the ones I wrote in my normal journal, these will be more steam-of-conscious, with associated bad grammar (and no paragraph breaks) and shit like that. I'll fix the misspellings, at least, though. I think I'm going to refrain from making (editorial comments) the way I did in the previous entry, though.

Behind cut because fuck what a lot of text. I'm actually surprised it all made it into a single post. )

Joseph and Tim have apparently both left THAC (TVTropes Page), for obscure, hush-hush, "not amicable," none-of-anyone-else's-damn-business-but-their-own-I-guess-at-least-until-they-inevitably-start-airing-dirty-laundry-at-some-point-in-the-future reasons.

(EDIT 2) And it looks like they finally decided to air their dirty laundry. So, yeah, I'm pretty much completely done with THAC and its members and former members now, and, truthfully, I already have been ever since they split up. Basically, this is ScrewAttack all over again, for me, and I am simply washing my hands of the whole thing. Marble Hornets was good, and THAC was good while it lasted, until the breakup happened, so there is still that, I guess. Maybe if they somehow managed to work out their differences, put all the ugliness behind them, and got back together again, then maybe I'd start paying attention again, but as of right now, since that seems like it is highly unlikely to ever happen, I'm pretty sure I'm out for good. (/EDIT 2)

For those who don't know, these guys are the ones who made Marble Hornets (TVTropes Page) and its spin-off series, Clear Lakes 44. Troy and relative newcomer Noah are still with THAC (EDIT 2) and now Noah is gone, too, as a result of the above mentioned airing of dirty laundry, and THAC effectively no longer exists (/EDIT 2), for what it's worth, but given that literally half of the group/company (Joseph and Tim) just up and left, for shady reasons, and one of the two remaining guys is "the new guy," I'm kind of doubtful of the future of THAC, despite the reassurances of Troy and Noah that everything's still smooth sailing (EDIT 2) which, of course, turned out to not be the case (/EDIT 2).

So... now, the crux of this post and the question for me, personally, is as follows:

Do I continue to follow the separate paths that these guys may take in the future with the creative, public aspect of their lives, the same as I still do with Channel Awesome[1] and Spoony, even after Channel Awesome and Spoony had their own less-than-amicable falling out? (EDIT 3) That is a moot point, since I have also dropped both Channel Awesome and Cinemassacre. (/EDIT 3)

Or... do I drop the whole lot of them, the same way that I dropped anything and everything to do with Stuttering Craig and Handsome Tom[2], starting from the moment that the latter left/was unceremoniously dumped from ScrewAttack[3] for what were most definitely "not amicable" reasons? (EDIT) Oh, and see also: GameGrumps and BalloonShop. These were two groups that I didn't really know much about mostly until after I'd found out that the original groups had already broken up for whatever reasons, and as such, I didn't ever really get into following them. For GameGrumps, I don't really think Egoraptor has been all that funny after he apparently stopped making animations, and I never really followed JonTron to begin with. (EDIT 4) And apparently JonTron went on to become a part of Irredeemably Toxic Shithole. (/EDIT 4) Though what I saw of GameGrumps while the two were still together was fairly okay (sort of a poor man's version of Two Best Friends Play), GameGrumps in its current incarnation (at least the very tiny amount of it that I was able to stomach) makes me want to hit myself in the head with a claw hammer only slightly less than PewDiePie does. For BalloonShop, at least, I've watched several of their videos, even so, because some of them are pretty damn funny, but still... I don't really follow them otherwise, unless I'm linked to them from elsewhere. So, I guess my natural inclination seems to be to simply not bother with groups like any of these, after they've had fallings outs among their members, with only a very few rare exceptions. (/EDIT)

Hmm... we'll just have to see how it goes, I guess. Only time will tell. (EDIT 2) Well, we saw how that turned out, so fuck everything, I guess. (/EDIT 2)

Aimlessly rambling footnotes behind cut )

So, apparently, the Marble Hornets movie (based on the web series, but with a separate, stand-alone story) has been available for the past couple of months already, and I somehow had no idea until now.

I haven't watched it yet (about to do that in a bit, and will probably update this post when I'm done), so all I really know about it going in is that it has Doug Jones as the Slender ManOperator. The only other thing I have seen with Doug Jones in it was Sockbaby 4. I make that statement apropos of nothing, really, as far as Marble Hornets is concerned at least, but just to plug Sockbaby again.

(EDIT)

Okay, I've seen the movie now. And... ...it was okay, I guess. It wasn't any better or any worse than any other Slender Man vlog I've seen on Youtube. And that was probably its biggest failing. It just didn't have a "This is a feature film, better than typical Youtube fare" vibe to it. I'm not sure if that's saying that the stuff you can watch for free on Youtube is as good as a feature film, or if that's saying that this feature film was "only" as good as stuff on Youtube. Probably a little of both, since I think the stuff on Youtube and elsewhere, like the original Marble Hornets, EverymanHYBRID, TribeTwelve, DarkHarvest00, and MLAndersen0, is all pretty good to start with. The film is as good as those, at least, in a self-contained one hour and thirty minute capsule. And, to be entirely fair, I also much preferred the more amateur-ish original The Blair Witch Project to the much slicker, Hollywood-ized Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2, so I guess I'd have probably disliked this movie here a lot more if it had been a bigger, more flashy production, so make of that what you will. Always Watching was at least as good as the original Blair Witch movie, I'll give it that.

The low points for me, mainly, were that, in a departure from most other Slender Man-related things like this, the three main characters were all unlikeable assholes from the start, before the whole Slender Man stuff kicked into full gear. Marty (the dog) was probably my favorite character. After the Slender Man stuff started in earnest, then they just became your typical, average, run-of-the-mill Slender Man vlog protagonists. Guys and girls going around with cameras filming everything and trying to figure out what the hell is going on. And then there was a bit of Blair Witch "the shit hits the fan now" stuff at the end, which was pretty cool, but beyond that it was mostly just standard Slender Man Youtube video-esque goings on. If you like that sort of thing, as I do, then you'll probably find it to be decent, but nothing superior. If you don't, then you won't like this either. Lastly, they could have gotten just about anyone to play the Operator himself, based on what you see of him in this movie, so the fact that it was Doug Jones didn't really mean much of anything for me.

High points for me: The bit where the random cashier in the convenience store asked Milo "You making some sort of Youtube video or something?" got an actual, legit LOL from me. Also, the missing persons poster for Alex Kralie when they stopped at a random gas station was a nice touch. And I like that they actually asked the "Hey, why don't we just turn off the cameras?" question. (Answer: It doesn't help. It really doesn't help.)

So, yeah, again, I thought it was okay, for what it was. YMMV.

So, uh, yeah... hadn't heard of thisthis until now. It is apparently trying to be Slender Man: The Movie, more or less. (Found out about it via TvTropes, naturally.)

But then, that's not the first project claiming to be such*, so I'm not really sure what to make of it.

* - Or, I don't know, maybe it actually is the first, at least of the ones calling themselves "feature length films" anyway. By that I mean that it's clearly not the first by any stretch of the imagination, unless you just don't count Marble Hornets or EverymanHYBRID or Tribe Twelve or Dark Harvest or any of the dozens of other vlogs, blogs, and whatever else that exist already (only a very, very tiny fraction of which I actually follow myself).
kane_magus: (Default)
I'd been slacking off lately on keeping up with the various Slender Man related stuff that I'd been watching/reading before, but as of now I am at least caught back up again on Marble Hornets, EverymanHYBRID, and TribeTwelve.

Interestingly, there was a bit of a crossover between TribeTwelve and EverymanHYBRID. Also, based on their small cameo in that same EMH video there, I might start watching Dark Harvest as well.

As for the rest of the stuff, the blogs and such, I might try to get caught up on all that later, but for now I'm just going to stick with the above, so as not to get all overwhelmed and burnt out on it again, which is kind of why I'd stopped following any of it for so long.

This upcoming new Enderman mob isn't really the Slender Man at all. Well, kinda, maybe.

However, it's totally SCP-173 though. (See also SCP-096, though that's not quite the same thing, since it attacks the instant you see its face, whether you look away or not.)

And though I haven't seen any Doctor Who myself, the Internet tells me that the Enderman is pretty similar to the Weeping Angels as well. (Man, I really need to watch me some Doctor Who someday.)

Based just on the look of them, they could also be those creepy guys in Super Mario Galaxy 2.

(EDIT)

Oh, and speaking of Mario, here is another thing that the Enderman is like. Yeah... not as creepy anymore when you think about it like that. >_>

(/EDIT)
kane_magus: (kanethumb1)
Do you like to be scared? Do you enjoy creepy things? Do you read horror stories or watch horror movies or play horror video games?

If you answered yes to any of those, then you'll probably like the Slender Man. Or at least the stories about the Slender Man, anyway.

Enter the world of the Slender Man, if you dare. )
