Well, it's either that or the SNES itself is giving out. Probably a combination of the two.

I was looking for something relatively mindless to do since I'm currently home with a migraine, so I thought I'd fire up EarthBound again, as I'd been playing through it recently. I was currently at a point in the game where I was simply walking back and forth and repeatedly fighting enemies, and the last few times I'd loaded it up I'd found myself literally falling asleep in the middle of doing that, so I figured it wouldn't be too taxing of an activity to do. It was either that or just sit around in a daze, since I don't much feel like doing anything else right now (well, aside from typing out this LJ post anyway, and even that is a bit much right now).

Some background: My overall intention had been to play through the game one more time and finally get the most important of the unique 1/128 chance items (Sword of Kings, Gaia Beam, Magic Fry Pan, at least one Star Pendant, Goddess Ribbon, and finally the Gutsy Bat) all in one playthrough. I'd made it to overrun Onett at the end of the game and was just repeatedly bashing enemies trying to get the Goddess Ribbon, as that was all I had left before heading to the endgame area, where the Gutsy Bat awaited. Had been doing this off and on for the past couple of weeks now, at least when I've played the game (probably a cumulative four or five hours spent on trying to get the Goddess Ribbon alone, which was mind-numbingly tedious). I got at least half a dozen annoying, useless Meteotites, but no Goddess Ribbon.

Well, I fired it up just now and had been playing it for about 10 minutes or so when, in the middle of a battle, the graphics and sound just glitched like crazy for several seconds before it finally went to a black screen. This didn't alarm me too much since it had been doing this rather frequently lately. It is, after all, a 16 year old cartridge on an even older console. I hit reset on the SNES and went back into it.

...

All three of the saves were completely wiped.

...

The game is technically still playable I think, in that I can start a new game and such, but after this I can't really trust it anymore. I think that's it for me. I'm done with EarthBound for the time being, and I guess I'll be moving on to Mother 3 again soon (I also recently completed Mother 1, aka EarthBound Zero, again as well, before starting on this recent replay of EarthBound, aka Mother 2). If and when I ever do play EarthBound again, it will have to be via a rom and emulator. It's kind of sad, because that's just not the same. *sigh*

Strangely, I'm not pissed off by this. I feel like I should be, given that it means that my most recent playthrough was pretty much a waste of time, especially since I was pretty much at the ass-end of it. But... eh. I feel more sad than mad. As I said, though, it was a very old cartridge, so I guess it was to be expected that it would give out eventually. I've played the game at least a dozen times now. The only thing I'm kind of disappointed about is that I never got the Gutsy Bat. That was the only one of those items, in all of my playthroughs, that I never managed to get legitimately on the original cart. And now I never will. :(

That's why I exclusively play emulator for NES/SNES -- I've even been doing it with GBA games that I own.

Cartridges tend to be pretty sturdy all the same. Even with my 2600 carts, I think I've only had 2 fail on me. (Since childhood.)
