I first read about it this morning via Rock, Paper, Shotgun so that's the article I'm going to link to here.

I've said many times in the past that the Gabriel Knight series is probably my favorite of the old Sierra adventure games (or perhaps tied with Quest for Glory for that honor, as I vacillate over which I like more depending on how the stars may be aligned at any given moment). The fact that Jane Jensen has securedlicensed the Gabriel Knight IP from Activision (thank goodnesssucks that Activision still has it, but I guess good on them for letting this happen, at least) and is remaking the first game gives me hope that there might finally, finally be a Gabriel Knight 4 at some point in the not too horribly distant future. That said, I also wouldn't mind remakes of GK2 and GK3 prior to that either. GK2 was a FMV game (a genre which apparently everybody but me innately hates) and GK3 was a very early gen 3D game that graphically did not age well at all. Also, perhaps if they remake GK3, they can get rid of that ridiculous cat hair mustache puzzle, among other things. ¬_¬ A potential downside to it being remade, though, is that they won't have the original voices in the remake, but that won't necessarily be a bad thing. For instance, I liked Dean Erickson as Gabriel Knight in The Beast Within just fine, even if it did mean that the iconic Tim Curry wasn't the voice any more. They did bring Curry back for GK3 for what it's worth, but still, someone else besides Curry doing Knight's voice in a remake isn't a deal breaker for me by any means. I'm sure they'll find suitable voices for the characters.

While I'm on the subject of Jane Jensen, I'll just plug Gray Matter again to start with.

And there's also the upcoming Moebius that's being made by Jane Jensen's studio Pinkerton Road, which is intended to be a sort of spiritual successor to Gabriel Knight.

Also, I recently started playing Cognition: An Erica Reed Thriller, which I got via GOG.com a few weeks ago. Jane Jensen was a story consultant on this series. I've only played the first episode so far, and while the game is buggy and unpolished as all hell*, the story and atmosphere definitely feels sort of Gabriel Knight-ish, which goes a long way toward letting me forgive the bugs and non-polish.

There are a few non-Jane Jensen-related games that I have compared to Gabriel Knight in the past as well, such as the Ben Jordan: Paranormal Investigator series and the Blackwell series.

But for me, while all of those other games are great (or at least hopefully will be great in some cases) for the most part, the original Gabriel Knight game will still always be the best.

* - Besides some of the weird graphical and animation issues I ran into during the first episode of Cognition, the reason I haven't already finished the series is because I ran into a bug in the second episode that made the game annoying to the point of being almost unplayable, so I just stopped for the time being. However, this will apparently be fixed soon (assuming it hasn't already, as I haven't yet checked GOG to see if the updated installers have been put up yet) so hopefully I can get back to it before too long.
