Okay, this is going to be the last time I post about this (fak)e-sports bullshit (EDIT) for a while (/EDIT). There's only so many ways to say "e-sports are not sports" and I'm sure it's already past the point of being stale. E-sports are bullshit, plain and simple, as is seemingly everyone who participates in them. That has been proven to my satisfaction. No need to keep harping on it, because, quite frankly, it actually interests me less than all of the other bullshit that goes on in the video game industry which actually affects me in some way, unlike e-sports, which do not (outside of annoying me with their mere existence).

So basically, the way I understand it is like this:

Riot has terms of service that say people are allowed to do fan related projects and use material from the game (ie: video of it being played) so long as it meets a simple restriction:

1. It's done free, or is only supported by ad revenue. IE: People can't be making Big Money off streaming the game.

E-sports becomes a "Thing" and the natural business of streaming games becomes Big Money with contracts with the players and all this bullshit.

Some people then use spectator mode in the game itself to rebroadcast games for free. And the Big Money people start trying to throw DMCAs and harrassments around for things they legally have no right to.

If Riot cared about their own policies they would have nipped the streaming BS in the butt the second one company tried to make money off it in ways that are against the TOS that have always been there.

This is Minecraft all over again. That is, it's basically Riot's refusal to stop what shouldn't have started for so long coming back to bite them in the ass. I can see why they refused to stop it originally - it gives them an insane level of exposure that their silly game would have never received otherwise. But now they have to either clamp down on that shit, even though the backlash will be huge, or they can be dicks to the fans that have been obeying the TOS from day 1, thereby creating bad will with a lot of players that will essentially lose all respect fro the company and it's game.

Either way Riot isn't going to come out ahead on this.

Heh, I wonder if it's all just a prelude to Riot being bought out by Microsoft. ¬_¬
