I don't know that Twitter is dying, really. Why? Well, it's because I personally don't even actually use Twitter all that much myself, and rarely ever have to begin with (aside from posting fire-and-forget links back to my LJ posts here), so I honestly wouldn't know if it was or wasn't dying in the first place.

That said, from what little I do pay attention to it, I can definitely see where the author of this article is coming from, generally speaking. Of course, everything the author says all applies not just to Twitter, but to Facebook and all the other flavor of the month social networking sites out there as well. About the only reason it doesn't also apply to LiveJournal is because almost everyone (except, perhaps, for the Russians who now primarily run and operate it and make use of it and occasionally perform DDoS attacks on it) has already left for greener pastures (mainly because the very same once did apply to LJ as well, and still does, in the tiny pockets, or hardened bunkers if you will, of "communities" that still use it).

In any case, all I really have to say is good luck with making a social media site like Facebook or Twitter or whatever that somehow won't become infested with trolls and/or raging shitbags almost immediately. Unless you adopt draconian modding policies (which will of course also drive people away), then you're not going to have much success with that. And hell, even if you do implement some sort of draconian moderation, people will find ways around that anyway or, worse, will find ways to actively abuse it.

I don't know, maybe I'm just being jaded and cynical. Maybe it is indeed possible to create a social media site that is actually impervious to trolls and assholes, but if there is a way to do that, I'm certainly not smart enough to figure it out. Meanwhile, I'll just continue to chill out here in the veritable ghost town that my little corner of LiveJournal has become.

And, as the article says towards the end, the shittiness of modern social media merely reflects the shittiness of society as a whole. Until someone finds a way to fix that, we're not going to somehow magically avoid the issue online either.
