It's sad, but... I don't know, maybe it's for the best. Hillary Clinton, like it or not, regardless of her qualifications, simply has far too much baggage associated with her, through little real fault of her own. The GOP, after well over two decades of ceaseless effort, has won this one, unfortunately.

I mean... god fucking dammit... just look at some of the shitbrained comments under that very Snopes article there. Or, rather, don't and save your sanity. I'll paraphrase them below.
"She had people killed"
"Uranium One"
"Congressional lies"
"Benghazi"
"Wikileaks"
"Her emails"
"Whitewater"
"Stole debate questions"
"Rigged the primary against Bernie"
"Laughed about a rape victim"
"Perpetual liar" (Anyone who can lob this against HRC after two years of Trump is just... I don't know... not even "Orwellian doublethink" seems like a strong enough term, "hypocrisy" most assuredly isn't strong enough.)
And so on and so forth, ad nauseam, ad absurdum, ad infinitum. In other words, yes, the very same sort of banal dumbfuckery that the GOP perpetual lying machine has been spewing for the past 20+ years.
If Jesus Christ, the Son of God, Lord and Savior, etc. literally came down from Heaven on a cloud and then declared that He was going to run for POTUS against Trump in 2020, the GOP would be drumming up the same sort of baseless dumbshit against Him as well. And the Trumpanzees would believe every last word of it. The fact that they still consider Trump to be a Godly man, even now, despite everything to the obvious contrary, speaks volumes. (Hell, if anything, all the GOP would probably need to do is actually tell the truth for once and merely point out the fact that Jesus was actually a Middle-Easterner, and that, all by itself, would probably be enough to cost Him the election. All the racists and white supremacists and xenophobes would be climbing over themselves to vote against Him in such a case.)
You might think that I'm exaggerating there, but at least one Trump supporter literally stated that he would trust Trump over Jesus. Exact words: "If Jesus Christ gets down off the cross and told me 'Trump is with Russia,' I would tell Him 'Hold on a second, I need to check with the President if it's true.'"

These are the people who support Trump/the GOP. Neuron-deficient wastes of oxygen like that guy there. There are millions just like him, and millions more who are even more ludicrously stupid. They would believe anything and everything the GOP spoonfed to them, via the likes of Faux Noise and Alex Jones and whoever, no matter how blatantly, ridiculously false it was. And as Trump himself said, he could shoot someone on 5th Avenue and not lose a single voter, and at this point, I honestly wouldn't doubt that. Even if Trump held a press conference today and admitted to every single crime he has been accused of doing, and even crimes that nobody else knew about beforehand, his dumbass supporters would still be screaming for evidence and would still be complaining about how much time and money the Mueller investigation is "wasting."
But it doesn't even matter that it's Trump. Hell, if it were anyone *else,* i.e. someone even slightly less cartoonishly, buffoonishly Stupid Evil than Trump is, none of this would probably even be a thing, really, even (especially) if Hillary had still lost. The fact that it *is* Trump, and yet *he's* *still* *somehow* *the* *goddamned* *President* *even* *now* ...well... that just shows A) how egregiously gullible GOP voters are and B) how ruthlessly effective the GOP perpetual lie machine is. Like I said in one of the posts I linked to above, the lie machine didn't care that Hillary ran against Trump or anyone else, all it cared about was that she lost.
As such, Hillary probably never stood an actual chance. Not really. And the exact same fucking thing would have happened if it had been Bernie Sanders instead of Hillary Clinton. And the very same thing will happen to Bernie Sanders this time, as well, or whoever ends up being the one running against Trump/the GOP in 2020.
I would say that Obama won in 2008 as much based on how utterly incompetent Dubya was (and, irrespective of John McCain himself, also based on the fact that Sarah Palin was shaping up to be even dumber than Dubya was) as he did on his own considerable merits... but then, that really doesn't explain how Hillary still lost to Trump, a guy who makes both Dubya and (to a much, much, much lesser extent) Sarah Palin look like Mensa scholars and saints by comparison (well, that is, if one blatantly ignores the entirety of Trump-Russia™, of course). Now, though, I would say that Obama's *real* advantage was the simple fact that he came virtually out of nowhere as a relative unknown when he first ran for POTUS, and as such the GOP lie machine just had far less time to build up a bank of bullshit against him. With that said, though, simply listen to how Trumpanzees talk about "Obummer"/"Obomba" today, though. Sheesh. To hear them tell it, Obama was the treasonous criminal who should be in jail, and Trump is the savior who swooped in and saved us all from the vile Hillary Clinton, also a treasonous criminal who should be in jail, in order to "make America great again." If it were *just* the GOP perpetual lie machine or *just* the fact that a large section of the population is comprised of boneheaded louts, either of those would be bad enough, but take both of those things together and... ... ...well, what happens is that you end up with a dumbshit asshat like Donald Jackhole Trump as the fucking President of the United States of America, I guess.
