I started playing it again on a whim a few days ago, with a fresh character, and I was honestly considering just moving on to something else at first, since the early game is always pretty slow. But now that I have at least gotten far enough to open up the Dungeon (i.e. killed Skeletron) and got a Magic Missile, it has reminded me how fun it is when you start getting better/cooler gear, so I think I'm going to stick with it for now. (More importantly, I've found several traversal items for increasing speed/mobility and also for reducing/nullifying the risk of dying horribly just from falling into a hole and even for just lighting up the surroundings without have to plop down torches every little bit, all of which makes exploring the world a lot quicker.) I mean, I was already starting to feel that way once I got a Starfury (and some Fledgling Wings, though they're really super shitty compared to the crazier wings/hoverboards/etc. you can get later, so getting those was actually a bit oddly disappointing... but still, they let me at least start fucking fly whereas before getting them I couldn't fly at all, so...) before that, and some of the Corruption weapons before that. Haven't yet made a Crimson world to mess around in this time, though, but I'll get to that soon enough, I'm sure.
The main thing that's going to help me stick with Terraria, though, is that since the last time I played it, they've added a ton more cool new stuff to it, not the least of which is an entire new NPC happiness mechanic, which I haven't even touched yet. Right now, because I've just built the same sprawling "apartment complex" kind of thing at the initial spawn like I did the previous time I played it, all the NPCs that have moved in so far are complaining about there being too many people around. Anyway, I'm currently playing on Classic/Normal difficulty and haven't even unlocked Hardmode on my current world yet, let alone started an Expert Mode world or, especially, the new Master Mode, which wasn't even a thing last time I played it.
One of the new things I have encountered is the Don't Starve crossover boss in the snow biome. I already had the Corruption stuff by that time, though, so he wasn't overly difficult to kill. (Having a Flinx summon [one of the new things that wasn't in the game last time I played it] to plink away at him didn't hurt, either.) Hell, for that matter, Don't Starve is a game I should probably try to get back into at some point, too, as I never really got all that far in that in the two or three times I've tried it, over the years. But that'll be at some point after I do all I'm going to do (however much that may end up being) in this playthrough of Terraria, though.

Mind you, the control setup was also a big negative for me like most games that require mouse and keyboard to play. Perhaps I'll see how well I can reconfigure the controls the next time I have time to play it.

Date: 2022-01-13 07:15 pm (UTC)From:The Corruption/Crimson really doesn't spread much at all in pre-Hardmode worlds. It's only after you activate Hardmode that it (and the Hallow, which gets introduced then and is just as "bad") really starts to spread. But even then, it's not instantaneous or even all that super-fast. And, yeah, especially by end game, if the Corruption/Crimson/Hallow really becomes bothersome, there are fairly easy ways to prevent it from spreading or reverse it. I never really bothered with it, though, outside of playing around with the Clentaminator (mainly to make a more easily accessible mushroom biome).
As for the control scheme, though... I dunno. I can't imagine playing it without mouse/keyboard, but then that's just what I'm used to. I guess you could use a controller, if you have one. There doesn't appear to be a way to play it with only keyboard no mouse, though, afaics.
