"'It becomes easier for other companies to follow suit'"
Sounds like just yet more modern video game industry bullshit to me. From what I can tell (as I'd never heard of Game Key Cards before this point), it's just a slightly fancier version of the practice of selling a box for a game that contains nothing but a slip of paper with a download code written on it. Except it's even worse, because you apparently have to keep up with the little card with the code on it and actually have it inserted into the console (even though the card itself doesn't actually have much of anything on it), or else you can't play the game. Or, you know, it's like a fucking NFT, except in the form of a physical card (so, at the absolute very least, it has that much going for it over NFTs). No actual game there, it's just a link or code to download a game from somewhere else. "pRoTeCtInG tHe InDuStRy" and "A mEaSuRe 'AgAiNsT iLlEgAl DoWnLoAdInG'" does virtually nothing for the consumer at all. Or, at least, nothing good, anyway.
Also, what happens when the Switch/Switch 2 servers are turned off in 10 years or so (ala the Wii, the Wii U, the DS, the 3DS, etc.)? All these little game key cards will become not even worth the plastic they're made of. And if the physical game key card itself degrades or breaks or wears out or gets lost, you're shit outta luck, too. It's like the worst of both worlds.
"Do you think a company that's already made that much profit would do this just to make even more money?"
Yes. Yes, I absolutely do think that. It's absurd not to think that. That's how fucking Capitalism works, you fucking moron.
With every little bit of news that comes out about the Switch 2, my already nearly nadiral desire to ever buy a Switch 2 (or, retroactively, a Switch "1", which I still have not yet bought, either) dies a little more.
