"They are not the same thing"

I have never once used Discord for anything, nor do I ever plan to start. The replacement of forums with Discord has made the Internet as a whole much less useful to me. Just yet another example of enshittification. And, again, Discord is nothing but just Johnny-come-lately IRC.

And, no, I seriously doubt that this will be the "one last time" that I rant about this. Fuck Discord. To hell with Discord. For me, "Discord" is either "like Q from Star Trek" or "that goddess from Hercules: The Legendary Journeys" or... you know... the actual word. And the simple fact that one would name their communications platform after the concept of "disagreement" is just asinine, but also fitting, in this case.

(Please welcome the new "fuck discord" tag, because I knew I'd posted about this before.)

Even ignoring how it affects MMOs, which I do not and will not ever play and vastly do not care about[1], the whole "Discord has replaced dedicated, semi-permanent forums," just in general, is one of the absolute worst, most dogshit things that has happened to the Internet. To hell with Discord.

Aside from that specific bit about Discord, the entire first two thirds of this video can be considered reason number four billion and whatever of why I do not play multiplayer games with randos anymore, in general.

Also, Woolie apparently completely forgot he was a streamer until Pat reminded him at the 33 minute mark. And the discussion that followed after has been added to the list of reasons why I will not ever be a streamer, either.

[1] - Outside of the rare few that have a decent solo-player experience, like Star Trek Online and The Secret World (or Secret World Legends or whatever the fuck it's called now), neither of which I've touched in over two years and eight years, respectively. And the one time I touched STO more recently, I barely got out of the tutorial shit before quitting out, uninstalling, and not touching it since, so the last time I really played STO was much further into the past.

Full headline, because Dreamwidth subject field length continues to disappoint: "Discord is opening the monetization floodgates: get ready for microtransaction stores and paid 'exclusive memes'"

I would like to thank Discord for giving me definitive reasons to never use Discord. Granted, that's not really saying much, considering that I've never used Discord prior to now, either, but now I have actual reasons to never use it. I mean, beyond the whole, "replacing dedicated forums with Discord is horseshit" thing.

Between Twitter, Reddit, Twitch, and now Discord, it seems like they're all in a competition to see who can kill a social media platform the fastest.

(EDIT) And, wow, the reputation management drones for Discord are out in force in the comments under that article. (/EDIT)

It's a Kotaku article from September 2021, but it describes a problem with the Internet as a whole that is only getting worse and more pervasive. See also: closing comments sections under blogs/comics/whatever-else-used-to-have-comments-but-now-don't and switching to Discord instead.

To hell with Discord.

Now it's like just about everything seems to have only a "Discord" now, instead, which is pretty much worthless. Even worse is that some sites have gone out of their way to remove the forums and comment sections they used to have and then replaced them with the useless Discord bullshit. Fuck off.

Again, to hell with Elon Musk.

(EDIT)

So, yeah, once again, this here Dreamwidth blog is basically my sole online presence. No more Twitter, no more Facebook, no more whatever else. I may eventually try to look for an alternative to those, I don't know, but as of right now, this very moment, I don't foresee it happening any time soon, if ever. People keep talking about Mastodon or whatever, but when I briefly checked it out back when I "deleted" my Twitter account the first time, it didn't really grab me. And I have zero interest in Discord or whatever, which seems to be the other main alternative. And I've never had interest in Instagram or Pinterest or any of the other dozens of social media crap there is out there.

For me, at least for now, Dreamwidth is it, and that's all. If it ends up that only [personal profile] owsf2000 ever reads my blather here, that's fine.

(/EDIT)

(EDIT 2) Seriously, the more I've looked into it, Mastodon and Discord both just kind of seem like gussied up present-day versions of old-school IRC chatrooms (strike-through to kill the Redundant Acronym Syndrome, even though saying "IRC rooms" just sounds weird), which, if that's actually how they function, are not really all that viable as alternatives specifically to shit like Facebook or Twitter, or at least it seems that way to me. (/EDIT 2)
