How very interesting.

Looks like they're rebooting the Mortal Kombat movie franchise, I guess. It's definitely going in a new direction from the original movies and the games they're all based on, but that's not necessarily a bad thing, given how crappy the second movie was (I actually liked the first one okay, though it was not a great movie by any means) and how horribly muddled the backstory of the games ultimately became. This one looks like it might be going for darker and edgier serious business, even for Mortal Kombat.

I watched the "trailer" and suspect it will be a movie AND a game. Seems like too much effort to just tease a game. That is, unless it has a lot of cut scenes and they're all done with live actors (like the Command and Conquer series).

Either way, if the fighting mechanics are sound, it will be interesting. Otherwise it will be a waste of effort.

Yeah, I'm guessing that will be the case as well. However, I was thinking that if it were going to be only one or the other, it would be a movie rather than game.

But then, why make a movie of what is now essentially a dead game series, especially a movie that seems to veer quite a bit away from the already well-established series in question and especially when that series already has two other movies to its name already, unless you're going to take a crack at restarting that game series yourself (given that Warner Bros. is now the new owner of the Mortal Kombat franchise)?

Hmm, yeah, it looks like they are working on a new MK game (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mortal_Kombat_9) after all, of which I was unaware until now. Maybe the game series itself is getting a reboot as well, given the "going back to its bloody origins" thing mentioned in that Wikipedia article. So I guess this new movie will indeed be a tie-in?

In any case, it looks like they may be doing away with all the multiple dimensions Outworld/Edenia/Earthrealm stuff, at least based on what little I've seen of the movie. I wonder how they'll treat characters like Raiden, who was a literal god in the original games, and Shang Tsung (or "Shang Zong", as it sounded like the dude playing Jax was saying), who was a shape-shifting sorcerer, since they've given other characters like Reptile and Baraka more "realistic" origin stories now? Hmm...

Jerri Ryan as Sonia Blade? Interesting...

Yeah, that was the thing that tipped me off that this wasn't just another fan-made (http://www.collegehumor.com/tag:street-fighter-the-later-years) series (http://therewillbebrawl.com/).

Apparently, the guy playing Jax (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Jai_White) is a somewhat notable-name and supposedly should have been a tip off as well, but I've never heard of him before. *shrug*

Her was in the first season of Heroes....when the show was good AND he was probably the most interesting character.

Weird, neither wikipedia nor imdb shows him as having been on Heroes (unless he was using a pseudonym or something). Of course, not that that really matters to me one way or another, since I don't watch it and still wouldn't have known him even if he had been in it. ^^;

He was apparently in The Dark Knight, which is pretty much the only thing in his filmography that I've seen (well, aside from the second TMNT movie, in which he apparently had an uncredited role as an "Audience man"), but I don't recognize the name of the character he played in TDK, so that doesn't help me much either. :/

Looks like I had my guys confused. In the low light, they look similar and damn, their voices are quite similar as well.

Well, it looks like the "trailer" was just a thing put together to test out the idea on movie execs. I doubt we'll see this come to fruition though.

However, the game series should still explore this route.
