How very interesting.
Looks like they're rebooting the Mortal Kombat movie franchise, I guess. It's definitely going in a new direction from the original movies and the games they're all based on, but that's not necessarily a bad thing, given how crappy the second movie was (I actually liked the first one okay, though it was not a great movie by any means) and how horribly muddled the backstory of the games ultimately became. This one looks like it might be going for darker and edgier serious business, even for Mortal Kombat.

But then, why make a movie of what is now essentially a dead game series, especially a movie that seems to veer quite a bit away from the already well-established series in question and especially when that series already has two other movies to its name already, unless you're going to take a crack at restarting that game series yourself (given that Warner Bros. is now the new owner of the Mortal Kombat franchise)?

Date: 2010-06-09 04:27 pm (UTC)From:In any case, it looks like they may be doing away with all the multiple dimensions Outworld/Edenia/Earthrealm stuff, at least based on what little I've seen of the movie. I wonder how they'll treat characters like Raiden, who was a literal god in the original games, and Shang Tsung (or "Shang Zong", as it sounded like the dude playing Jax was saying), who was a shape-shifting sorcerer, since they've given other characters like Reptile and Baraka more "realistic" origin stories now? Hmm...

Date: 2010-06-09 03:39 pm (UTC)From:Apparently, the guy playing Jax (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Jai_White) is a somewhat notable-name and supposedly should have been a tip off as well, but I've never heard of him before. *shrug*

Date: 2010-06-09 07:52 pm (UTC)From:He was apparently in The Dark Knight, which is pretty much the only thing in his filmography that I've seen (well, aside from the second TMNT movie, in which he apparently had an uncredited role as an "Audience man"), but I don't recognize the name of the character he played in TDK, so that doesn't help me much either. :/
