There was recently a big kerfuffle over this with Dragon Age 2. Now it's starting again with Mass Effect 3.
I don't get it. My male Shepard, same as with anyone else's male Shepard, isn't going to be required to bang a dude in ME3, any more than my male Hawke was forced to bang Anders or Fenris or whoever in DA2.* Does the fact that this was a potential option bother me like it apparently does so many others? No, not at all. So why are people making such a big deal over this? Again, I have no idea, aside from just blaming it on typical, retarded homophobia. (Unless it really is the case that some uber-nerds are truly worried about "creating inconsistencies" or "altering canon" or whatever. *eye roll* Well, and the gay people calling for Gaider to be fired isn't a case of homophobia... that's more just a case of regular stupidity, I guess.) This is especially strange given that gay romances were already an option way back in Jade Empire (not to mention a polyamorous relationship, for that matter), which was released six freakin' years ago. And there was that bit in Fallout 2 as well, among others. If there was a huge brouhaha about all this back then, I don't recall it, so what has changed since then to make this such a touchy issue nowadays? Is it just that more people are into video games now than back then?
(EDIT)
Also, this.

* - Personally, I was leaning toward Merrill in DA2 (as opposed to Isabela), though I stopped playing the game altogether before even finishing Act I, so I guess it's a moot point. As for Mass Effect, when I do another playthrough of the first two games in prep for ME3, I'm totally going to ignore both Ashley and Liara in ME1 so that my Shepard will be less of a scuzzball when he goes after Tali in ME2. And Tali better retain an important role in the party in ME3 and not be shunted off to the sidelines like Ashley and Liara were for the vast majority of ME2. Also, if and when I ever do a full playthrough of the whole series with a female Shepard, should the option to go after Tali with femShep present itself in ME3, then I will be ignoring Kaidan and Liara in ME1 and everyone else in ME2 to wait for that as well. ¬_¬
