Played a bit of multiplayer Minecraft with Mord this evening. First time ever playing multiplayer in Minecraft. And, well, the first time playing multiplayer anything in a very long time.
And it was cool... until it wasn't.
It was on a public server. That, right there, is probably "enough said" for a lot of people.
First of all, the chat, which takes up a good portion of the bottom left of the screen, was completely filled with people complaining constantly about griefers or with griefers claiming to not be griefers or with people asking for items (even though the server rules, which are right there when you first spawn, say that this is a bannable offense, but then so was griefing) and so on and so forth. At one point, I saw the owner of the server (I assume it was the owner, because he had a red [Owner] tag in his name) said something like "If you say you don't like this server I will kick your ass off!" or some such. This kind of stuff alone was already making me antsy. Anyway, Mord and I didn't even bother with the in-game chat at all and were using IRC.
Second of all, and the thing that made me quit, was that one of the admins on the server kept randomly teleporting himself on top of me. He did this like three or four times in the span of the couple of hours or so that we played it. The first time he did it (or maybe second, because I did see someone else for a split second before this, but I'm not sure it was the same guy), he stood there for a bit, then put up a sign that said "Hey, I'm <name redacted> and I'm an admin." Then he knocked down the sign and disappeared. I was like, uh, that was weird. But I figured that was it. But then he kept coming back. He'd show up out of nowhere, just stand there for a bit or maybe run around a little, and then blink away. The last time I just got fed up and quit. Apparently, according to Mord who talked to him a bit after I left, he was just curious about what we were doing. Well... I'll just say that if something as seemingly innocuous as that was enough to disenchant me on the whole thing, I guess it was better to know that sooner rather than later, because as soon as some asshat showed up and started griefing in earnest, I'd have probably done the exact same thing: just quit and never come back.
Oh, and there was quite a bit of ever present lag, particularly when they did the fairly frequent world save thing, but I guess that just comes with the territory when you're talking about online multiplayer stuff. The lag alone didn't really bother me, but when combined with the other stuff above, it obviously wasn't an incentive to stay, either.
(Also, this is kind of casting a shadow over my interest in The Secret World as well, because if I can't handle relatively harmless stuff like this on a simple public Minecraft server, there's no way in hell I'll be able to handle the random douchebags that are sure to show up in a full-blown MMO. >_>;)
Anyway, I'm sure I'd have been fine with it had it just been me and Mord, or maybe a few other people that I knew. I think mostly the "public server" part of this story is where it was destined to end poorly for me. Just about every time (all three or four of them) that I've tried to play a multiplayer game that is open to the general public, it has ultimately ended up being a bad experience for me, and is why I tend to just not care about multiplayer games at all these days.
But then, sadly, I'm also just kind of tired of Minecraft in general, lately. Tonight would be the first time I've played it at all in about a month or so.
On the bright side, for what little it's worth, I do have a Kane Magus avatar in Minecraft now that I whipped up prior to playing multiplayer, rather than the bland default that I'd been using all the time prior to that:

Looks like they're getting ready to install McBans and Big Brother mods to help with the griefers.

In fact, I turned off mobs entirely and made it a building server since building wonderfully and wacky structures is how we get our kicks.

That and I love building grinders and trapping spawners with windows just so I can watch the little shits run into a blade of lava.

Date: 2011-08-04 12:44 pm (UTC)From:At first, we had lots of thrilling moments while exploring and looking for resources to build various things. Lots of team mining expeditions and such, finding some interesting caves and locations. That's the one thing I love about MC, it's random terrain is sometimes quite beautiful.
However, mobs were interfering with my dedicated work of building a giant Monkey Island monkey head, or when they interrupted a friend trying to construct a super mega scaled version of SDF-1 from Robotech, and we wished they weren't there. And so I turned them off.
It also resulted in less swearing and really allowed our imaginations run wild. But mostly, it cut down on the swearing.
