The United States (and the world) would be a better place *not* if people like Trump, McConnell, Ryan, etc. were to be *prevented* from being elected, but only if everyone simply doesn't *want* to vote for asshats like them to start with. That's when we will have truly succeeded.

Regarding the government partial shutdown. I find that well timed when the democrats were 1 vote away from getting the net neutrality gutting repealed. Let's hope people remember it still has to be put forward by the time the politicians decide to get back to doing the job they're being paid for.
