Yes. This, exactly.
The whole "you're Satan and the absolute worst and that's why I'm running against you in the primary, oops you beat me in the primary, all those horrendous things I said about you during the primary, true or not, don't matter at all now, and now I'll throw my full, unbridled support behind you in the general election, because you're suddenly the bestest awesomesauce ever, and the other guy in the other party that you're running against now is the REAL Satan and ACTUALLY the absolute worst which is why you're the hero who needs to beat him" thing in politics has never not completely baffled me.
And it doesn't even work. It's part of the reason why so many "Bernie Bros" got so fed up and ended up (idiotically) voting for Trump (who truly was and is the absolute worst).

What I'm saying is... why can't more politicians be like John McCain (at least in this particular sense)? And yeah, listen to those pre-MAGA MAGAts there in the crowd booing him for being a decent guy.
