Critical Role...

I keep thinking to myself that I really want to watch Critical Role... but then I remember that the first campaign alone is literally 19 days and 9 hours worth of video[1]. That's 465 hours and change. The second campaign is even longer, weighing in at 23 days and 1 hour (and counting). 553 hours. That's 1018 hours (and that number will increase) of video to watch if I want to watch these things. And even with just watching one episode a day, that's still 3-4+ hours per day for (as of right now) 254 days, and that's assuming I did watch an entire episode in a day and didn't split it up over multiple days or something.

By comparison, if one wanted to watch all of Star Trek[2], i.e. all of the shows, movies, animated series, shorts, etc., it would take "only" around 652 hours (as of now, at least according to this).

But then, a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step and all that. Still... it's pretty daunting...

So... I think I'm going to just dive in, starting at the start, as soon as I can determine where, exactly, that should be... only... not tonight, as it's already after 1:00am EST. >_>;

(EDIT) Just got finished watching the first episode. I kind of feel like Gabe in that Minecraft PA comic. "Oh no. Oh no. I'm in some real fucking trouble here." (/EDIT)

[1] - According to a site I found via Google that calculates playlist lengths, since Youtube itself asininely no longer provides that information, as far as I can tell, even though it used to do that, iirc.

[2] - Which I had actually successfully done at one point, but then they just, you know, kept making more Star Trek. Sadly, I can no longer say that I've watched all of Star Trek at this point.

I watched most of the first ep over the weekend. Not sure if I'd be able to devote enough time to it to really watch it all myself unless I'm just listening to it as background noise while doing other things. Does kind of remind me of my old D&D campaigns long ago although we certainly didn't do much for impressions and the like... since we weren't like voice actor types - just teenagers.

I've watched the first three so far and it gets pretty crazy at times. There's a bit in the third episode where they're arguing over whether to attack or sneak around a duergar war camp led by an illithid in the caves under that dwarf city (after getting the bridge across a huge chasm leading to the war camp destroyed and tricking some of the trolls and ogres and duergar into falling into the chasm with illusion spells) or go down below into the chasm and explore, and after they vote (four to two with Orion Acaba/Tiberius abstaining) to go to the war camp, two of the party members (Laura Bailey/Vex and Marisha Ray/Keyleth) say fuck it, take the flying carpet, and go down into the chasm anyway, where they find an outcast illithid who they basically somehow convince to join their party. That's where the third episode ended. The DM, Matthew Mercer, does a pretty good "illithid voice," too.

The upcoming drama where Orion/Tiberius leaves the game at episode 20-something, for whatever reasons due to real life issues, is probably going to be cringeworthy, but... since I already know it's coming and am braced for it, maybe it won't be as bad as it otherwise would have been.
