Here's one major difference between Democrats and Republicans: Democrats are potentially willing to give up rights as long as doing so will protect and help others, whereas Republicans are potentially willing to give up rights as long as doing so will harm and marginalize others.

An example: Democrats are potentially willing to give up free speech protections as long as it helps to prevent hate speech and other forms of harmful speech. Republicans are willing to give up voter rights as long as doing so is more harmful to minorities/POC than it is to them.

(I should clarify here that when I say "Democrats" and "Republicans," I mean "white Democrats" and "white Republicans," at least in the cases where that is relevant. Which is probably most of them.)

Democrats are more willing to give up control in order to protect rights (theirs and others'). Republicans are more willing to give up (others') rights in order to protect (their) control.

(The problem with that, of course, is that the ones who are in control tend to be the ones who determine who does and does not have rights in the first place, as we've seen for the entire time that the US has existed as a country.)

To restate another way, Democrats are more willing to potentially give up their own rights to make sure that others gain rights they may not have had before, whereas Republicans would rather take away the rights of others if it means protecting and strengthening their own.

Another example: Democrats are more willing to give up or modify gun rights if it means there are less gun deaths overall. Republicans will never give up gun rights or allow changes to them, ostensibly to protect themselves, no matter how many others may end up dead as a result.
