What a horrible, ugly story.
This kid...
Okay, I like to think that there is good in everyone, and that even the worst of people can be redeemed somehow. But there are times like this when the fairy tale fails, and I seriously think that God should just nuke the entire fucking planet and start over, because when there are people as disgustingly vile as that kid was, something is bad wrong. I mean, yeah, he may not be Adolf Hitler or Osama Bin Laden or anything, but damn. Evil is still evil, though.
At first, I thought it was just another "blah blah blame the video game" story, but no. This goes far beyond that. If anything, this kid bringing up the "like a video game" comment is, as his stepmother said in her email to Gabe, just him attempting to play people like a flute, as he had been doing all along, because he knows it will drive assholes like Jack Thompson apeshit, and then the real issues, whatever those may be, will get lost in the shuffle. Not this time though. At least, I hope.
As much as one side likes to place the blame on video games (or whatever) and as much as the other side likes to place the blame on the the parents, sometimes there just isn't an explanation one way or another for why people do what they do, outside of some abstract concept like "pure evil". Sometimes, some people are just bound and determined to be shit stains in the toilet bowl of humanity, no matter what. It doesn't matter how good their parents might have been, and it doesn't matter how many or few video games they might have played. They're simply going to be a villain, and heaven help anyone who gets in their way.
