Well, a few days ago, I went and bought NovelAI's Opus tier (the highest available, $25 USD per month, though I don't know if I'll renew it when the time comes, toward the end of next month). Up until today, I'd been using it exclusively for text/story/game-like stuff. Krake, their most advanced (so far) text-gen AI, is... fairly okay. Possibly comparable to old-school, pre-fuckup Dragon on AI Dungeon, maybe? Not perfect by any means, and I usually have to "retry" a lot due to non sequitur nonsense as well as partially edit the "passable" stuff it outputs, but when it's good, it's pretty good.

I had been completely ignoring and avoiding messing with the image generation stuff at first, mainly because I didn't have anything I cared to try to make. Until it dawned on me that I could try to make a "Kane Magus" with it. So, just before starting on this post, I generated a metric buttload of images, since with the Opus tier, images of size "normal" or smaller cost 0 Anlas (i.e. the "currency" or whatever it is they make you use for generating images, and Opus comes with something like 10,000 Anlas per month [I currently have 12,500, somehow], though I haven't used any of it yet).

Don't worry, I will not be trying to embed those images in this post, because Google Photos is shit and breaks embeds after only a day or two. I will be linking to several of them, however. And here is where I will be putting a cut, to spare my main page from the wall of text below.

"We discuss YouTube creator burnout in light of the hiatus announcement of James & Mike Mondays."

It wasn't Youtube, but I'd have to say that burnout was probably one of the main reasons that I finally wanted to stop doing OW! posts (well, that and the fact that it seemed like just about everyone else had already burned out on it even before I did), given that I'd been doing them on a semi-regular basis from... fuck... something like 1998 to 2003 or so? Five years? That's actually kind of hard to believe now, looking back on it. And that was just writing silly posts on a newsgroup.

And I've certainly felt burnout on trying to write a novel. Hell, it's why I've only gotten like six chapters or something like 32,000 words, even though I've been "working" on the thing off and on for like five years or more now.

I couldn't even imagine myself doing something more demanding than that like writing for a skit show like AVGN, not to mention actually performing said skits, or even just doing a regular podcast or a Let's Play series or something like that. I like me some video games, that's for damn sure, but having to do it on demand, as a performance? Fuck no to that noise.

That's pretty shitty for anyone who was ever a big user of that service.

That said, the only thing I ever used on Yahoo Groups was the Otakuwars! Mailing List. I've already sent a message to there to alert anyone who may still actually pay attention to it that it'll be gone after December 14, 2019. If I were to save anything from there, it would be, at most, my own shit, but I'm not sure if I care enough to do even that much, to be honest. :/

(EDIT)

So... just for shits and giggles, I initiated a "Groups Download" thing via the "Verizon Privacy Dashboard" (EDIT had to fix the link... I so fucking hate the fact that Facebook doesn't properly preserve URLs in posts when you copy/paste from there /EDIT) thing. It's currently doing one of those "we'll email you when your download is ready" things, so we'll see how that goes, I guess.

That said, I don't know if it's going to include the entire group, or just whatever I posted as "newkanemagus." Which would not include a single one of the posts I made from my original "kanemagus" account, given that I lost access to that years ago.

[personal profile] dmjewelle made a post on Facebook yesterday (which is currently public, so I'll just link to it from here).

I'm going to copy/paste my own replies to that which pertain to the current subject into this post. (EDIT 2) None of those links work, though, since I have since deleted my Facebook account altogether. (/EDIT 2)

Behind cut for length )

Yeah... so... that is my current status as far as writer-type shit is concerned. I had been planning to write up a big, long, whiny, self-pitying, inane, baby-tantrum rant about all of that stuff here, but I got distracted by "child's birthday party" stuff yesterday and never got back to it until today... and today I'm just not feeling it. Which might be for the best, actually. *weary sigh*

(And, yeah, I'd totally read that "Bridge Girl" graphic novel, if it were a real thing.)

(EDIT) For reference, since I mention them in this post:

-- The MLP:FiM/Star Trek crossover stuff.

-- The MST of my Castlevania/Sailor Moon fanfic. The MST was co-written by [personal profile] owsf2000. (Just to note, most of the typos that are still in [and mocked in] the MST version of the original fic were fixed for the fanfiction.net version of it.)

-- As for OtakuWars! posts... meh. I'm not giving a link to that stuff here. If you really want to see them, at least some of them can probably be found via a Google Groups search for "alt.fan.sailor-moon" and "OW!" in the subject line. I posted there as "Kane Magus," naturally.

I finished reading The Dreamer's Thread last night. It was quite good.

(Oh, and here's the official website, which I forgot to include before for some reason. Hmm, it looks like that page isn't valid anymore, but here is the author's page itself, which is just as good.)

Copy/paste of the Amazon blurb:

"Everyone Dreams. But what would you do if you suddenly found out that you were one of the few who creates dreams for the whole world? Would you use your power to harness the light and weave it into beautiful tapestries of magic and wonder, or would you fall prey to the seductive siren song of darkness and nightmares? For tattoo artist Aura Mayville, this becomes a reality as she is ripped from her life of art and music and thrust into a realm where good and evil struggle for control over the minds and hearts of men. With a sarcastic sorcerer, a mercenary, and her Spirit Guide as her only companions, Aura must journey through the dream realm to discover both her power and where her heart truly lies. In a place where anything is possible, can she find the strength to hold on to herself, or will she be lost to the shadows forever?"

Oh, and Aura happens to live in Seattle. It's not a major plot point or anything, aside from mention of Pike's Place Market early on, but I thought I'd point it out as it's of particular interest to me.

Despite this being the author's first published novel (as far as I am aware anyway), I think it's still as good as anything from more established Big Nameā„¢ authors, be it Harry Potter or something by Stephen King or whatever. She's working on a second book now as well, which is something on which I'll definitely be keeping an eye.

Oh, and for those of you who were in the OtakuWars!, you might recognize the name of the author, as she was the writer for Amara Alexander. I saw echoes of Amara in Aura as I read the novel, which was pretty cool I thought.

(EDIT) Both of those links are broken now, due to Yahoo Groups going extinct, so I should probably just delete this post entirely, I guess, but I'll just leave it because whatever. Maybe because of the comments, if nothing else. (/EDIT)

I... I just wrote an OW! post, and I don't know why. o_O

First one in... ... ...only two years? Huh. How about that. I would have figured it to have been much longer than that. >_>

Hell March 3.

This is a tiny bit old, but I only found out about it tonight, so it's new to me at least. I mean, I knew Mr. Klepacki was making a new version of it for Red Alert 3, but I didn't know it was already out in the wild.

Anyway, it's pretty nifty. I like it.

There's less drastic a difference between HM3 and HM2 than there was between HM2 and the original Hell March though. For comparison: Hell March 2 and, of course, the original.

For you OW!ers out there, consider this to be Kane's new theme song, to be included on any new hypothetical soundtracks. *nods sagely*

I go bed now.

(EDIT) Links to Youtube videos replaced with newer links to newer Youtube videos, due to typical Youtube bullshit. (/EDIT)

Hmm, apparently ASMR has gone down for good. It sorta sucks, but honestly, since I only visited that site maybe once a year or two at the most (mainly in an ever futile attempt to get my email address in my profile changed to my current one rather than the one that has been inactive for about 4 years now, since the ability to change it myself was non-existent), this only affects me insofar as I had a fanfic hosted there. It was a horrible piece of shit fanfic that, at the time of course, I thought was a masterpiece. That time being almost 10 years ago or so, while I was still in my teens. I was a different person back then. *sniff* For those unfamiliar with it, it was a Sailor Moon / Castlevania crossover fanfic. Yeah. It was that bad.

I mention this now, however, because after hearing last night about ASMR going down, I got to reading over the MST of this fic (which had also been hosted at ASMR) that I co-wrote with [personal profile] owsf2000 over the course of a year or so, ending sometime in 2005. It's still pretty damn funny, even if I do say so myself. It's part of the reason I was up so damn late last night when I should have been sleeping or working on some of my Art class project. Fair warning, in case you have the slightest interest in reading this MST, but are not familiar with Sailor Moon and/or Castlevania, and to a lesser extent the OtakuWars!, then it won't make a hell of a lot of sense. Also, fair warning, the MST contains some gratuitous profanity and crude risque humor, among other things, so if you're not into that kind of thing, steer clear. Also, as a point of reference if anyone cares, here are the bios (or Writer's Guides, for those in the know) of the OW! characters who are performing the MST: Kane Magus, SD-KM, Tuxedo Dionysus, and NC-Janitor.

(Links to the OW! stuff changed back to Mord's dreamhosters site instead of the angelfire one, because they seem to be working fine now.)

[livejournal.com profile] owsf2000 is attempting to compile a list of websites and contact info from former OW!ers, as a way for us to more easily keep in touch or to get back in touch. If you were ever in the OW! and are interested, go check his post for more info.

Here's just a sort of stream of conscious list of stuff, in the order that it comes to mind.

(EDIT) Breaks have been added between bullet points per request. That's the only concession to coherence that I'll make, since I'm not touching that big block of crap in the first point again with a ten foot pole. That big block of crap can be summed up by the first sentence and the last sentence, which is just a restatement of the first sentence, and the rest of the big block of crap in between can safely be ignored because it's a big block of crap.
