I just got done playing through what I thought was all the new shit recently released for Vampire Survivors, which was a couple of new adventures (finally, one for Tides of the Foscari, which didn't have an associated adventure until now) and some other assorted secrets and unlocks and new weapons and whatnot. A fair bit of content. But when I got done, I was like, "Wait, hold on, where's the crossover stuff with Square Enix and that SaGa game I haven't played and have no interest in buying or whatever?"

Turns out the SaGa: Emerald Beyond crossover is a a whole separate DLC that required being manually added and downloaded, rather than just being an automatic update, even though it's free. Makes sense, in retrospect, I guess? Kind of? *scratches head* So, yeah, I wasn't as done as I thought I was. Won't be doing all that new new shit tonight, though.

Anyway, I guess this is probably a lead up to some massive Vampire Survivors DLC crossover with Final Fantasy or Kingdom Hearts or Dragon Quest or whatever. Kind of like how they teamed up with Konami for a Contra DLC first, before getting to the one that actually made sense. That'd probably be cool, too. Personally, I'd prefer Chrono Trigger/Cross, though. Of course, that just means that what they'll actually crossover with is something like the Mana series or Front Mission or Parasite Eve or ActRaiser or some shit. ¬_¬ I mean, don't get me wrong, I'd still play those, too. (I still bought and played that fucking Among Us crossover DLC, after all, even though I otherwise have less than zero interest in Among Us itself. Vampire Survivors is still Vampire Survivors, even if it's crossing over with some weird thing that I don't care about.)

Took me longer than I thought it would (but not really since I went several days at a stretch without even touching it at all), but I've finally unlocked everything in Ode to Castlevania. The last character to unlock cost over 17 million gold, and I only had like 3 million at the time, but one trip to Moongolow with Sammy and weapon slots set to 1, and I had 20 million gold in less than 15 minutes, or about seven minutes in real time (had it set to Endless, too, along with Hurry and Hyper, but didn't even need that, since I exited out before I even reached what would have been the 15 minute time limit).

So, now I'm going to get into spoiler territory beyond this point (behind a cut, if you're seeing this on my main page).

Silly, nitpicky, and also spoilery character stuff behind cut )

No spoilers. I'm just going to say that everything about the final boss from lead-up to aftermath is by far the best thing in Vampire Survivors so far, and it will be incredibly tough to top it with anything else in the future, assuming there's more updates/DLC to come at some point down the line.

The Ode to Castlevania DLC, as far as I can tell, is around half or so of the game now, and that's if you include all of the base game and all the rest of the DLCs combined, probably. It was certainly worth that "1 less money than VS."

(EDIT) Oh, and fighting the "final" boss seems to be only the halfway point. So maybe there is something else later. (/EDIT)

"The full-circle moment we've been waiting for."

Huh. How about that.

Watching the trailer, I saw some pretty deep pulls in this, like Saint Germain and Pumpkin. And, wow, they're even including Sonia Belmont in this, despite her being officially declared non-canon by Konami almost 20 years ago. I didn't notice any Lords of Shadow characters, though. I also didn't see Aeon, either. However, I did see several characters in the trailer that I didn't even recognize.

Be kind of funny if Dracula himself was left out of it so as not to break the trend of not having vampires in Vampire Survivors. There's no mention of him in the release announcement, and I didn't see him in the trailer... though it did play a bit of "Dance of Illusions"/"Illusionary Dance" at the end of the trailer. (Also, Alucard isn't a vampire, he's a dhampire, so him being there doesn't break the streak.)

Vampire Survivors join forces once more with KONAMI, this time featuring their notable Castlevania franchise, in a new DLC which many have been anticipating!

The Vampire Survivors have come a long way in their honorable hunt, and after joining forces with the Belmont Family, they are the closest they've ever been!

This all-out celebration has over 20 new characters, 40+ weapons including more whips than you can count on one hand, 30+ music tracks from Vampire Survivors historic composers Daniele Zandara and Filippo Vicarelli, but also from fan-favorites Evelyn Lark and Keygen Church! The BIGGEST stage we've made yet! Even though we're literally at Dracula's Castle, there's still zero vampires?

And the cherry on top: a man.

Darkanas are absolutely broken as fuck. (Especially with Queen Sigma.) And this was just me fucking around with it for a little while, rather than actually trying to engineer some truly beastly build or anything.

Those first three links are screenshots from a run I just completed. The fact that it took three screenshots just to show the list of weapons I picked up (including all the Candyboxes and Arma Dios) is nuts.

I wish I had taken a screen shot of the map screen before the run ended, but I didn't think about it until it was too late.

This run, even though it lasted almost an hour (more like almost 30 minutes, real time, since I had Hurry mode turned on), was not on Endless mode, which means that Reapers did start showing up at the in-game 30 minute mark. I was trying to see if I could actually kill one of them without having to use Infinite Corridor, but after another almost 30 minutes (almost 15 real time), I gave up on that, since any given Reaper's health is 655,350 x player level when it spawns, and my player level was already in the multiple hundreds by the time they started showing up. The last reapers to spawn would've had something like almost 500 million health (though actually probably way higher than even that, since that doesn't even take into account the amount of Curse I had, from maxed out Skull O'Maniac, Torrona's Box, and, by the end, Gold Ring and Metaglio Right, and I don't feel like doing that much math right now). So... yeah, that probably wasn't going to happen any time soon, even if all the weapons together were doing over a million DPS (assuming they all hit any given Reaper at the same time, of course, which probably wasn't actually happening). I eventually remembered that I had taken Laurel and Clock Lancet, so instead of just standing there waiting for any one of the Reapers to finally legit die, I just gave up and went to grab the Metaglios and the rings to evolve them to Crimson Shroud and Infinite Corridor. Didn't really need the Crimson Shroud, since the Reapers weren't able to kill me even without it. (I could've just manually quit, I suppose, but where's the fun in that?)

If you look at those screenshots, on the right hand side, where it shows the dropped items I picked up, on the second row, next to the gold coins, those little blue hearts are Crystalized Hearts from the new Crystal Cries Darkana. I had picked up 13,959 of those things. That's why the Reapers couldn't kill me. It's also why I reached almost to level 700. My health regen was at something like almost 40 health per tick, and I don't even know why my Growth was by the end of it, since on the stat screen, that had been completely pushed off the bottom of the screen by all the weapons and passives I had picked up, but I remember the last time I looked and was able to see it, it was already in the multiple hundreds percent increase to XP gained, and that was way before the Reapers started appearing, too. I also had Sapphire Mist, Moonlight Bolero, and Hail from the Future (and Disco of Gold from the regular Arcana list, too, just for shits and giggles).

I know poncle said the Darkanas are "experimental and subject to change," and I suppose that they probably should be nerfed, maybe, but I'd be okay with it if they weren't. *shrug* ¬_¬

"Vampire Survivors managed to bag itself a Konami collab, but not the one everyone was expecting."

Huh.

You know, when I first heard about the upcoming new Vampire Survivors DLC a day or two ago, my initial reaction was simply something along the lines of "well, a Contra DLC is weird, but at least it isn't as bottom-of-the-barrel-scraping as that Among Us DLC was," before I simply tossed it on my Steam wishlist and then completely forgot about it. It didn't even occur to me until now how (apparently intentionally) weird it is Poncle collaborated with Konami for... Contra... instead of, you know... Castlevania.

But then, most of the sprites in VS are already just shy of wholesale plagiarizing Castlevania (and Bayonetta, among others) to begin with... close as they can possibly be while remaining "legally distinct," and all that... so what would a Vampire Survivors/Castlevania crossover even look like? *eye roll*

Oh, and here's the obligatory anime trailer for the DLC:

*sigh*

Went through a Steam discovery queue today, and five out of the twelve games in the queue were Vampire Survivors clones, all with the word "Survivors" right there in the titles of the games. That's what I get for starting to play Vampire Survivors again, I guess.

*weary sigh + eye roll + smh*

But, of course, Vampire Survivors itself is just a clone of Magic Survival, so... *shrug*

I reinstalled Vampire Survivors for the first time in a while to try out the new DLC thing, which I bought the other day for something like 36% off, thanks to the bundle trick.[1]

And my save was completely wiped and gone. I was able to restore a backup via the options, but it still looks like everything from before I got the other two DLCs is still gone. Bits and pieces from the DLCs are still weirdly showing up, though.

Honestly, since I don't actually trust that backup save at all, I am tempted to do one of two things, right now. Either (1) delete my save entirely and start over completely fresh, or (2) just say fuck it, uninstall Vampire Survivors altogether, and never touch it again, ever. I might just end up doing a bit of (1) before getting tired of it and moving on to doing (2) anyway.

Interestingly, the way to clear your saves is a bit arcane (in-game, at least, since you could just manually delete them in OS). Google told me that you have to go into the options and click on the "Account" icon seven times, which brings up an otherwise hidden "Delete Save" option. A bit weird, that. And then, if makes you confirm at least three times before you can actually delete the save.

[1] - The bundle "trick" is that when you buy a game/DLC in a series for which you've already bought all or most of the rest of it, and there is a Steam bundle for that game/DLC/series, the "bundle discount" is almost always bigger than the individual game/DLC discount. In this particular case, when I bought the Among Us DLC thing for VS, the DLC by itself was something like 30% off or whatever, but the bundle (which, for me, contained only the Among Us DLC, since I already had everything else) was 36% (or whatever it actually was, but I'm pretty sure it was 36%[2]) off.

[2] - On checking my purchase history, I got it for $1.59 (not counting tax), and the DLC is $2.49 USD normally, with no discount, so yeah, it was 36% off with the "bundle" discount.

Vampire Survivors: Emergency Meeting is the upcoming 'Among Us' themed DLC, for Vampire Survivors by poncle! 🧛🚨

The Survivors join forces with totally trustworthy Crewmates to be the bullet hell... in space! 🚀

Coming 18th December 2023 to PC & Xbox 🧄
Nintendo Switch & mobile arriving later, sorry for the delay.

In collaboration with the wonderful 'Among Us' developers, Innersloth.
Trailer and Emergency Meeting soundtrack: Filippo Vicarelli
Animation and Key art: Studio Yotta

Okay... I have to admit that when I first saw this, my initial thought was that VS is really starting to scrape the bottom of the barrel for content now.

But then, I remembered that I was mostly okay with the all the Terraria stuff and the Bloodstained stuff[1] (and, hell, there's apparently a new thing in Bloodstained that I didn't even know about until the writing of this very post), so I guess this crossover thing in VS is in line with all of that.

(It's just that I don't give the first flying fuck about Among Us at all, and I am more than a little tired of how rife the Internet is with memes relating to "Amogus" or whatever, I guess. That's all. And VS doing a crossover with AU isn't going to change that opinion, either. If anything, it just reinforces it. ¬_¬)

In any case, I would have to reinstall Vampire Survivors if I want to try this new stuff, since a few weeks ago, I finally uninstalled it for the first time since buying it. And, you know, buy the new DLC when it comes out, since it apparently will cost $2.49 USD. I'm not in any great hurry, to be honest. The "Adventures" stuff sounds kind of interesting, though.

[1] - Well, not so much the Blasphemous one, since the crossover was only one way, as there still has been no Blasphemous content added to Bloodstained as far as I am aware (as of now, at least).

Loaded up Vampire Survivors after the latest update just to see how well the new engine does, and... yeah, it does pretty well. I did a couple of runs with Queen Sigma in order to make a couple of the most busted, frame rate-killing builds I could think of. By the 30 minute mark on each of those, they were still chugging along at mostly the same speed as when I started, even on my almost decade-and-a-half old CPU. On the older versions of the game, it would have become practically a 2-3 frames per second slideshow by that point.

One other thing I noticed is that everything (graphics, screen size, etc.) just seems slightly smaller now, which is kind of weird. Almost as if the top-down "camera" had been pulled "upward" to a slightly higher "elevation," if that makes any sense. In other words, I guess, you can see a bit more, now, but it's all smaller. Larger field of view. Zoomed out. Whatever.

As for the rest of what was updated, I don't care about multiplayer co-op (local or Remote Play or otherwise). End of story. And I don't have a Switch, so the fact that it is now available for that is completely irrelevant to me (and would probably remain so even if I did have a Switch). And aside from that, there was nothing new added to the game, in an actual gameplay sense (i.e. no new characters, weapons, stages, etc.)

If I want to scratch my Vampire Survivors itch beyond this, I'll probably go back to HoloCure (in which I just unlocked the last of the [at least current] character roster via the in-game gacha thing, which is... a start, I guess?)
kane_magus: (Default)
Huh. (Via here.)

Well... I guess that kind of makes sense, sort of. After all, the trailers for the two DLC packs already had cartoon scenes in them.

Just to note, however, there are exactly as many voice overs and cartoony cutscenes in the actual game as there are vampires. (I.e. none at all.)

I got the second DLC for Vampire Survivors because of course I did. I think I like it a bit better than the first one.

As with Moonspell, the new DLC has a new level (two of them, actually), with its(/their) own little gimmicks and such, rather than being a bland, forever-scrolling flat map, like most of the earlier levels are. There are eight new characters and six new weapons (unless I've missed something), not including the evolutions. Actually, there are eight new weapons, because one of the new weapons is pretty neat in that you have to get three separate, similar weapons at first (each takes a slot) and have all of those max before it then evolves into a new weapon that is the combination of the first three (only takes one slot), with some extra bells and whistles. The rest of the weapons are fairly mundane, though (for VS, anyway, as they're still pretty crazy over the top, once powered up and evolved).

Oh, and there's still no vampire in the game yet, at least as far as I've seen.
kane_magus: (Default)
I've only played it long enough to get the Night Sword and to unlock Miang and Menya, though I just quit out after playing as Menya for only a minute or so, because I didn't feel like playing anymore, at the moment.

That said, Mt. Moonspell is actually a pretty cool stage, because unlike most of the other stages, which are just endless sprawls of repeating semi-randomness, this one is more an actual place. For one thing, you can't just beeline straight for the items or the ? (coffin with Miang in it) that show up on the pause map the way you can in most other stages, since you have to traverse around things like actual cliffs and stuff.

In any case, there's still quite a bit more for me to unlock, which I'll probably do tomorrowlater today. After that... ...I dunno, I'll probably just go back to not playing it at all, again, at least until more stuff to unlock gets added in any future updates. *shrug*

(EDIT) Now everything's unlocked (again), and that means I'm pretty much done with it (again), at least until the next update. (/EDIT)
kane_magus: (Default)
As expected, there's paid DLC coming for Vampire Survivors. Granted, I'm not sure what makes this different from all the other free updates that have been released over the past several months, since it just seems like more of exactly the same, but okay. In any case, I'll probably get it, eventually, considering it's only $2. *shrug*
kane_magus: (Default)
Until and unless the dev does something truly crazy with the game in the future (e.g. finally putting the actual vampire into Vampire Survivors, which still hasn't happened yet), I'm pretty much done with it. And even for the truly crazy stuff, I'd probably only come back and play it just long enough to unlock it all, then quit again.

Just played it one last time, using Gains Boros, on Moongolow, with all the Modes turned on. All of the passives, because Moongolow (including Torrona's Box, via normal leveling). Weapons (loosely in the order I got them, after evolutions and all that shit): Heaven Sword, Gorgeous Moon, Fuwalafuwaloo, Victory Sword/Sole Solution, Vandalier, Ashes of Muspell, and eventually (thanks to the Candybox and Super Candybox II Turbo), Death Spiral and Soul Eater. Arcanas were Beginning (X), Mad Groove (VIII), and Blood Astronomia (XXI).

By the time I finally just gave up and let the interminable Moongolow Atlanteans kill me (which still took a bit of time), I had been in the level for over 120 minutes (60 actual minutes, due to Hurry mode), was over level 500, and had gotten almost 800,000 gold. I thought about taking a screenshot of the results screen, but I didn't even feel like bothering with it.

Honestly, by the end, it was mostly just tedious, and I was ready to stop. Not as bad as before, with Avatar, since Gains doesn't increase his speed to inanely unplayable levels, but still.

Back out in the main menu, I peeked into the PowerUp menu just to see how much gold I actually had overall, and it was almost 1,500,000. That's almost one and a half million gold, with absolutely nothing to spend it on, outside of, like, golden eggs via the merchant or whatever, which doesn't even matter, really, because the Moongolow Atlanteans were dropping gold eggs left and right anyway.

So, yeah, I'm pretty much done with Vampire Survivors (and VS-likes) for now. It's a cool game, but I think it has run its course with me.
kane_magus: (Default)
Really can't wait for the next big thing to come along that the modern[1] video game industry will jump onto like a train, or maybe a bandwagon, and ride it into the ground, where the copycat lives, which they'll grab by the tail and swing at the horse, over and over, until said horse is dead, though that won't stop them from beating it repeatedly, of course.

Basically, I'm just already tired of seeing blatant, inferior Vampire Survivors ripoffs constantly showing up in my Steam discovery queue nowadays. I expect it to get way worse before it ever starts to get better, though.

[1] - Can't even call this a "modern video game industry" thing, honestly, because this has been a thing since at least the days of games like Pac-Man or Breakout or whatever. If it can be made as a video game, it can also be (badly) cloned. But then, of course, it's not a phenomenon that is exclusive to video games either.
kane_magus: (Default)
So... I'm just gonna post a few screenshots. (Not even going to bother trying to embed the screenshots here, because Google Photos will shit the bed, almost immediately, as usual, so... there are some links instead.)

Screenshot #1
Screenshot #2
Screenshot #3
Screenshot #4

The gist: after unlocking Avatar Infernas, I played as him on Moongolow with both Inverse and Endless (and all the other usual shit) activated. Since I was on Moongolow, I picked up all of the passives, though I made sure to first get Torrona's Box via leveling up. (I used all of my retries on the first level up, and got it on the very last one. If I hadn't gotten it, I'd have simply restarted the level and tried again until I did get it.) I got Torrona's Box because I knew I'd be getting the Victory Sword at some point, but apparently Torrona's Box is also required to evolve the starting weapon of Avatar Infernas as well. Also, I got a Candybox from one of the boss drops, so I used that to also take the other new weapon, Greatest Jubilee, which apparently doesn't even have a Wiki page yet, at least as of the time of this post. I'm sure that will change soon enough. If the Greatest Jubilee has an evolution, I don't know what it is, because I didn't get it, if there is one to get. (And the Wiki Weapon page is currently incorrect, because Avatar Infernas does not start with Greatest Jubilee. He starts with Flames of Misspell [which also doesn't yet have a proper Wiki page], which evolves to the Ashes of Muspell, which is crazy busted as far as damage dealt.)

The screenshots there show the point where I just gave up and quit, as the game was almost literally unplayable at that point. (I.e. Avatar Infernas was moving so ridiculously fast that it was becoming difficult to even pick up boss drop chests, because when I'd tap the direction buttons to move toward the chest, he would just kind of blink through it. Like, he would almost teleport a short distance, and then appear on the other side of the box than the one I started from, just from moving so fast. Probably due to skipped frames or lag or some shit.)

Oh, and that run was, of course, after all the ludicrous shit required to unlock him in the first place, which I won't even discuss/spoil here.
