Lately, whenever I'm in the car going to the grocery store or something, I've noticed a bit of a trend in my radio usage. Generally speaking, I have a core five or six music stations that I alternate between (automatically skipping over both the local country and local hip-hop/rap stations), which are typically of the rock, oldies, contemporary, pop varieties, or any combination of these, as the case may be.

The vast majority of the time I am in the car listening to these radio stations, I tend to skip over songs if I hear a male voice and stop to listen if the singer is female. I'm not exactly sure when I started doing this, but it has definitely become a thing. While doing this, I've found several new songs that I'd never heard before, some old(-ish) and some new(-ish). Stuff like "Royals" by Lorde, "Walk Me Home" by P!nk, "Tom's Diner" by Suzanne Vega, "Ex's and Oh's" by Elle King, "Everything I Wanted" and "Bad Guy" by Billie Eilish (I like most of her stuff, but these are the two that get played all the time on the radio), and "Hand In My Pocket" by Alanis Morissette, just to name a few.

That said, there are definitely still some exceptions to the above, i.e. male vocalists that I'll stop skimming to listen to. Stuff like "Smooth Criminal" by Michael Jackson (as opposed to the shitty cover versions that some stations like to play, though I'll probably stop and listen to those, too) since that seems to be the MJ song they tend to play the most lately, "Come Together" by The Beatles (again, the original, not the shitty cover versions) which, again, seems to be the Beatles song that is most played on modern radio stations these days, most any song by Queen (the latter two almost invariably get played back-to-back on the one station that tends to play them repeatedly) or David Bowie (or, you know, Queen and Bowie together [though I always kind of deflate a bit when it turns out to be "Ice Ice Baby" instead]), and I have to say that I've also gained a new appreciation for Prince lately, too. And I'll usually stop for "Tainted Love" by Soft Cell (which, I found out, is actually a cover itself and not the original) and "Sweet Dreams" by Eurythmics (and, for some reason, I tend to associate those two songs together in my head, dunno why, maybe because both have covers by Marilyn Manson [though those don't tend to get played on the radio]). Also, while I typically avoid country, I'll stop for some things.

But yeah, generally speaking, if I'm just station surfing and I hear some random song with a male vocalist, I'll probably just keep going (and there are some that I actively avoid because I've heard them too much and am just sick of them), but if it's a female vocalist, I'll typically stop at least for a little bit (unless, again, it's a song that I'm overly familiar with and just don't like all that much). If it's just some rap thing, or some screechy thing, I'll resume surfing again, but if she can at least marginally hold a tune, I'll usually stop.

All of the above is a far cry from what I tend to listen to when I'm just sitting at the computer or whatever, which is usually video game or anime or cartoon/webcomic soundtracks or remixes and covers of the same. If I do listen to "normal"-ish shit at home, it tends to be stuff like ICP, MC Frontalot, Jonathan Coulton, or Aphex Twin, among other... ...non-standard things like that. They just don't play that kind of thing on the usual car radio stations, though. Not that it has bothered me enough to try to make any kind of mix CDs for the car lately, either.

Okay, this post became far more of a random-ass "here's some music I like" post than the short(-ish) post I originally meant it to be, which probably could've just been the first and fourth paragraphs by themselves, with some slight edits. Initially short(-ish) posts often tend to become long-ass time sinks with me, I find. ¬_¬
