Man, if you'd told me before an hour or so ago (it's currently almost 4am) that I'd be into watching videos of some dude listening to and reacting to video game music for games he (claims to have) never played before, I'd have told you "No, not really, but that does sound kind of interesting. Let me look into that."

And then we'd be here, now.

(I see in the Youtube sidebar that this is A Thing™ that apparently lots of other people do as well, which is a rabbit hole into which I am not properly equipped to dive, at the moment. I don't even have the wherewithal at the current time to even embed a shit ton of this guy's videos, much less anything else. Probably should go to bed now, for real.)

(EDIT) This isn't my first introduction into "React Andy"-type streams, because I've seen all of the slop streams of Woolie and Reggie, but the "entire video reacting to just one (or two or three) song(s)" is a new wrinkle. (/EDIT)

After listening to some music that [personal profile] scissorsevered posted, over here, it got me to thinking about some of the stuff I've tinkered with over the decades. Nothing original, per se, mostly just video game... um... to call them "covers" or "remixes" would be charitable. Meh, I'll just post links here. All via my Google Drive.

(Also, um, maybe a volume warning on some of these, particularly the first one, because even after I normalized the volume on them, they still rather loud to me on Google's player thing.)

Behind cut )

So yeah, assuming I got those Google Drive links working correctly (I tested them while logged out of my own account, and I was still able to access them, at least), that's pretty much it. There are a couple more old MIDI things that I could have uploaded and linked to here, but I chose not to, because they suck absolute ass. ¬_¬
kane_magus: (Default)
I know I've mentioned these games before, but I don't feel like looking up old posts and linking back to them right now.

What I do feel like doing is posting links to full in-game soundtrack playlists for the first and second games here, as well as embedding below the special on-disc CD album that was included with the second game.

These games still hold up fairly well in a gameplay sense even now, and I do recommend giving them a try, though I wouldn't honestly call them the greatest games of all time or anything like that. As I'm sure I've said before, however, the soundtracks from both games are among my absolute favorite video game soundtracks of all time, though.

"What are some of your favorite video game soundtracks?"

I won't go into the picks that Ian and Pat made, since you can just watch the video above to hear about those.

For me... well... for me, I have to say that music is probably one of the most important elements of a video game. If a video game has good music, I will forgive a lot of its other shortcomings that it may have. If a video game has shitty music (or no music at all, in some cases), then even if that game may otherwise be good, I probably won't care about it as much.

As for what I like, I'll just mention the Winamp playlists I have at the moment to start with. (See, all my shit is bootleg mp3s, mostly from KHInsider and, before that, from Galbadia Hotel which apparently went the way of the dinosaur. I don't have fancy vinyls like Ian does, though I have to say that's extremely fucking cool.)

All that shit behind cut )

Those are not every soundtrack I have... just most of them. That also doesn't include the colossal shit-ton of orignal NES/SNES/Game Boy/GBA/DS/Genesis soundtracks that I have in emulated (i.e. non-mp3) form, which includes stuff not above, like Super Mario Bros or the earlier Legend of Zelda and Metroid games. I'm not listing all of that shit here, because I'd be here for about two or three days, probably. (Even for what I did here, Dreamwidth claims I started on this post at 10:43am. It's now 2:20pm as I'm about to click the post button.)

I guess you could call this another Game Music Thing post, since that's what it is.

(Also, I see even now that this post is going to be a fucking nightmare when I come back to it in a year or three and see that 90% of the above links are dead or some shit. Hell, even some of the playlists I tried to use now had deleted videos or "not available in your country due to copyright" blocked videos.)

Youtube embeds behind cut )

I could go on, but I'll stop there.

(I say liked in the past tense, of course, because Konami sucks and this is all pretty much in the past now, where it will remain, most likely, until and unless something changes, such as the slim chance of Konami miraculously ceasing to suck at some point.)

Youtube embeds behind cut )

I really need to try to play this game (and the first one) again, some day.

I also need to start doing more Game Music Thing posts again, someday. This one doesn't really count as that... but I'll count it anyway.

(EDIT, a day later, 1:00pm EST) Well, in lieu of making a new Game Music Thing post (at least for now, anyway), I instead finally went back and fixed all the broken Youtube embeds from all the previous Game Music Thing posts, because it really bothered me when I was trying to go back and look at those last night. It was more annoying than it should have been, however, because even though most of them were fairly easily fixed by simply copy/pasting the embed code from the original LiveJournal posts back into the equivalent Dreamwidth posts, there were actually some broken embeds in the LJ posts as well (people closing their accounts, videos getting taken down for copyright bullshit, etc.), for which I had to hunt Youtube and find replacements. Also, even more weirdly, in some of the older DW posts, instead of just showing the "invalid LJ-embed" or whatever like usual, the embeds had been strangely replaced by completely irrelevant embeds from newer posts I'd made here (like Some More News stuff or MLP stuff or whatever). I have no idea what was up with that. Oh, and the Minecraft music post had to be substantially updated, given that Youtube is shit and got rid of annotations, which completely broke that one video I had originally embedded there. In any case, it should all be fixed now, for what it's worth. *shrug* (I didn't bother to fix the still-broken LJ versions, though. ¬_¬) (/EDIT)
kane_magus: (Default)
(EDIT) Yeah, no, this isn't a thing anymore. If I bother to do Game Music Thing posts anymore, it will be here, most likely, not Twitter. Not that I won't post musically-inclined Youtube videos on Twitter, it's just that if I make a big production out of it, it'll more likely be here than there. (/EDIT)

So, yeah, I've basically moved the Game Music Thing stuff to Twitter now, as of this post (technically this post but the earlier ones were from before I started tagging).

So yeah. There is that. This is assuming, of course, that I don't misspell the damn tag. I've almost typed #KMGameMustic I don't know how many times now. -_-

Undertale

Okay. I'm going to talk about Undertale now. Here, also, are the Steam and TVTropes pages for Undertale (view that latter one at your own risk, especially if you are spoiler averse).

Here is a demo for the game. I might actually go back and play the demo myself at some point, because I've heard there are some tricks that it does that even the full game doesn't do, such as manipulating the demo's manual based on how you play. As such, you should probably look at the demo's manual before, during, and after you play the demo. (As far as I can tell, the full game doesn't have a manual at all.)

First comes the non-spoilery bits. I'll provide a LJ-cut and tons of spoiler space and even <lj-spoiler> tags once I get into the really spoilery stuff, so don't worry too much. Just be warned that there'll be some slight spoilery stuff even before that, though. (EDIT for Dreamwidth) Be warned, the <lj-spoiler> tag does not work in DW, so all previously hidden spoilers are now not hidden, except behind the original cuts. (/EDIT)

Mostly non-spoilery bits behind cut )

The music is awesome. Hell, I'll even do an impromptu, half-assed Game Music Thing, right here and now.

Just a very few (ever so slightly spoilery) examples from the soundtrack:

Now onward into real spoiler territory...

Super spoilery bits behind cut )

So, yeah, you should give Undertale a shot. It's pretty neato, I think.

It's been almost two years since my previous Game Music Thing post, and I'm kind of getting a hankering to do another one sometime relatively soon, maybe-ish. Won't be tonight though. I kind of want to go back and make sure the Youtube embeds on all the previous ones are still working (and fix the ones that don't) before doing that, but that won't be tonight eitherand that's complete because (amazingly) there was only one out of the whole lot that needed to be replaced.
kane_magus: (The_Sims_Medieval)
(Note: this game used to be called "Sequence," but due to idiotic legal crap it has been changed to "Before the Echo." Just so you know.)

I'm tempted to just post the entire soundtrack for this game, but I'll just limit it to my favorites, separated into two categories. Commentary will be minimal. Just the music, this time.

Non-battle music )

Battle music )

Again, this isn't the entire soundtrack... just most of it. ¬_¬

I got a Steam code for this game through backing There Came an Echo on Kickstarter. Even if that game never comes to fruition, I will still have considered the money well spent just for getting SequenceBefore the Echo. SequenceBefore the Echo is a game that I never would have had much of any interest in, normally, but having actually played it now, it's pretty damn cool. Seriously, the game has the memetic version of Joseph Ducreux as one of the bosses.
kane_magus: (The_Sims_Medieval)
Been a while since I last did one of these. Let's get right to it.

The following are my personal favorites from the Universe at War: Earth Assault soundtrack. All of these are by Frank Klepacki, the composer for the Command & Conquer series from the very beginning up through Red Alert 3: Uprising.

Behind cut, yadda yadda yadda )
kane_magus: (The_Sims_Medieval)
As I said last time, I intended to make the next Game Music Thing be one based on the Ace Attorney series. Here is that one.

To make this somewhat simpler (since otherwise I'd just be posting the entire soundtracks for all of the games), here are some rules. For each game that has the same type of track throughout the series (courtroom, objection, pursuit, etc.) I am going to pick the one (1) that is my favorite from one (1) game. Beyond that, however, for game/character specific stuff, I'll just go with whatever.

You know the drill. )
kane_magus: (Default)
For reasons that I cannot adequately explain, even to myself, my music-at-work playlist for the past week or so has consisted of Dr. Doom's theme, Taskmaster's theme, and Magneto's theme from Marvel vs Capcom 3, on infinite repeat.

Youtube vids behind cut )
kane_magus: (The_Sims_Medieval)
Yeah, I've been playing a whole lot of the X series lately. As of this post, I've completed the (one and only, so far) storyline plot missions in X3 Albion Prelude and have returned to Terran Conflict in order to wrap up some of the plots I'd left incomplete when I moved on to AP.

The music is not an insignificant part of why I like these games so much.

So, let's get to it.

Multiple Youtube video embeds behind cut )

There is a ton more awesome music in the games besides those, but it's beyond the scope of this post to just list everything. >_>;
kane_magus: (The_Sims_Medieval)
That's 10 official versions of his original theme from Super Street Fighter 2. Not fan-made remixes (though, technically, I guess the HD Remix version would count as "official" even if it was fan-made). Not the totally different themes that were used in Street Fighter 3 or Street Fighter Alpha 3 and the like. Ten official remixes of the original theme.

Aw what the heck, let's just consider this to be Game Music Thing 8.

Youtube videos behind cut. )

Okay, that ended up being more effort than I was expecting to put into this when I started this post (which was just going to be an off-hand mention kind of a thing originally), but oh well. ¬_¬
kane_magus: (The_Sims_Medieval)
I was playing Metroid Prime the other day, and I was going through the crashed frigate, most of which is underwater. After the third or fourth trip back through this level, I was thinking something along the lines of "Man, the only thing I like about this level is the music." That's when the lightbulb for the idea of this post appeared over my head.

I'm just going to post a bunch of music from various underwater levels in games I've played. (I thought about including ice levels as well, but that would have doubled the size of this post. Besides, that means I can now do a "Ice Edition" or something later.) I know I'm leaving out a lot of stuff, and I might come back later and add more if I have a "I can't believe I forgot that!" moment. But for now, this is just whatever I thought of off the top of my head. (If you feel like posting your own "I can't believe you left out this!" comments, please do.)

Youtube videos behind cut )

That's it. For now, at least.
kane_magus: (Default)
I was all set to post a bunch of youtube videos here with the music from Minecraft, but looks like I only have to post this one (make sure annotations are on):

(I'm sure that's not the first video to use annotations like that, but that's certainly a neat way to make a kind of "table of contents" thing for multiple videos.)

*weary sigh* Thanks to Youtube doing away with annotations, I'm back to hunting down and embedding each individual video again. Thanks a bunch for that, Youtube, you stupid fucks. >_<

A bunch of embeds where there used to be only one because Youtube is ass sometimes )
kane_magus: (The_Sims_Medieval)
The premise is simple: spooky/creepy music from video games. No categories this time or anything like that (aside from spooky/creepy), and in no particular order (but grouped by game, and with one exception to the "no order" thing), and no commentary (until the end). Just the music. There's a whole lot of it, this time, just whatever came to mind as I was writing this post. Without any further ado, let's jump right into it.
