"In Angry Video Game Nerd 223, The Nerd takes a look back at some of his favorite retro video game commercials after referencing them for years."

He mentioned the rapping Zelda commercial, but not that really weird one.

Anyway, several here that I'd never heard of before, like the ones with Jack Black and Paul Rudd in them.

I don't think either of those songs are quite as good as his Hamilton parody of Trump, but they're still pretty good. (If either of the above two songs are also parodies of existing songs, rather than original songs, then I'm just not familiar enough with the source material to recognize them at all.) Also... apparently he did this "politiclash" thing with Trump vs Biden last time, too? *shrug* I haven't watched that one/those ones, yet, and I'm not sure I'm interested in doing so now, four years later.

He did manage to get me to watch an embedded ad, though, since I didn't even realize it was an ad at first (for some news aggregator app or some shit I've already forgotten the name of). When I realized it was an ad, I considered skipping it, as I almost invariably do with such ads in every other video I watch, but he was throwing out stuff actually pertaining to the two songs (discarded lines and why), so I ended up watching the whole video, rather than just the first and last two-thirds of it.

"Hi. There sure are a lot of media layoffs happening! Let's look at how and why that happened and what we can do to make sure quality journalism doesn't get phased out like National Geographic and Sports Illustrated."

I almost immediately nope'd out of this episode when I saw that it was going to be yet another one that involved Warmbo (which the video's own captions repeatedly misspelled as "Worm Bow"), but I decided to stick it out, regardless.

The basic gist (or, at least, my own personal interpretation of the basic gist): advertising, marketing, capitalism, and just, like, the greedy pursuit of unsustainable and ever increasing amounts of money is deathly poison to journalismthe Internetthe world as a whole, in general. Also, I typed that previous sentence when I was literally only maybe two minutes into watching the video. Now that I have actually finished watching the whole video, I see absolutely no need to go back and change that prior sentence in any way, because that pretty much was the actual gist of the video. It was, pretty much, a fifty-five minutes and twenty-eight seconds long restatement of the phrase "the love of money is the root of all evil."

Also, all that shit makes this seem like an even more impossible task than I already imagined it to be.

(Really, though, whoever did the captions for this particular episode did a rather piss poor job of it. Did they, perhaps, use an "AI chatbot" to write them or something? Oh well, tangentially speaking, at least Worm BowWarmbo didn't play much of a role in this ep. The fact that he played any role at all wasn't great, but it could've been far, far worse, I suppose.)

I've seen this goddamned commercial roughly seventy-eight billion times, and I don't even fucking watch TV. Like, at all. It seems like every single time I leave my room to go to the kitchen for something, and my sister is sitting there watching TV, this fucking commercial will be playing. Every single fucking time. I usually come in right around the part where that one woman is doing the robot, and then the other woman smashes her head through the low ceiling.

It is banal. It is tiresome. It is inane. It is aggravating. It sucks. I hate it. Please, make it stop.

Yes, I am exaggerating about how often I've seen this commercial.

But not by much. For real, it has happened three times, today alone.

If I ever have to buy a new cellphone plan at some point, you can damn well be sure it will never be Consumer Cellular. (Sort of like if I ever need to buy car insurance, it won't be fucking Liberty Mutual. Their commercials are even more asinine. It all makes me wish adblock was a thing you could have out in the real world, and not just on the Internet.)

(I thought I'd already made an entry about this a couple days ago, but apparently, I forgot to actually, you know, post the fucking thing.)

Over the past three or four days or so, I've started seeing this god damned dumbfuckery popping up when I load a Youtube video page. I'm not watching your fucking ads, Youtube, and I'm sure as shit not going to pay you for the privilege of not watching your fucking ads, Youtube. Right now, the shit-licking pop-up can be dismissed and ignored (at least until it pops up again later) (EDIT now it starts with a little circle in place of the X that slowly fills up before it changes to the X and lets you click it to get it the fuck off of your screen /EDIT), and it's also not as outright threatening (for now) as it apparently was when they first started rolling out this horseshit, but the moment they make it actually do something more troublesome, I think I'm out for good. In other words, this is getting very close to the last straw with me, concerning Youtube's bullshit. Between this and a bunch of other Youtube bullshit, I'm this close to just saying fuck it all, entirely, and stop using the site altogether, which will suck, but I'll survive. If I can't use an ad blocker on Youtube or if I'm not allowed to watch videos on Youtube if I'm using an ad blocker, then Youtube can suck rancid diarrhea from a pustulous asshole and drown to death forever.

Fuck Youtube. Fuck Google. And, most of all, fuck advertising. Advertising (and, more specifically, the disgusting stranglehold that advertisers increasingly seem to have on creators and providers, and the ever more asinine, obnoxious, fucked up hoops that creators and providers are jumping through in order to get their hands on that ad money) is one of the absolute worst things to have ever been inflicted upon Youtubethe Internetthe world as a whole.

Find less invidious ways to make money. That goes for Youtube users/creators as well as for Youtube/Google itself, and, hell, for anything else that would ostensibly die without advertising money. If your business can't survive without you shilling for something and being paid for it, then your business is shit and, frankly, needs to die, for the overall good of humankind.

Capitalism sucks.

(EDIT 2) So, as it apparently turns out, the simplest way to get around this shit is to just log out of Youtube entirely, delete all Youtube cookies from your browser, and set your browser to block Youtube cookies to prevent yourself from accidentally logging back in, and that will (at least for now) stop that shitty pop-up from popping-up, while also not preventing you from watching Youtube videos without ads and without being nagged about it. Only problem is you can't comment or rate comments (and who really gives a fuck about that; I just reinstalled the comment blocker add-on as well), and you have to remember to turn off auto-play and to change the video quality (since it apparently defaults to whatever is the absolute lowest available for anyone not logged in). But beyond all of that, and until Youtube finds a way around even this, you can watch Youtube videos without being bothered by shitty ads or Youtube nagging you about blocking their shitty ads. Granted, all Youtube will have to do is make it so that you can't watch videos at all without having a Youtube account and being logged in to said Youtube account, though. That, of course, would just be yet another nail in Youtube's coffin if they do that, but whatever. (/EDIT 2)

"The experiment is meant to urge users to disable their ad blockers or subscribe to YouTube Premium."

Yeah, and Youtube can eat shit and die, then.

Haven't seen this bullshit myself, yet, but I will be sorely tempted to just straight up delete my account and never use Youtube again, if I ever do get hit with it.

Fuck advertising forever. Fuck marketing forever. Fuck commercials forever. Fuck paywalls forever. It's also because of advertisers that Youtube content creators are becoming so limited, like being forced to not have swears or whatever in the first arbitrary number of minutes of a video or else be demonetized.

Remember when one of the main reasons people switched to cable TV versus regular network over-the-air TV was to get away from commercials? Remember when commercials almost immediately came to cable too, and people switched to online shit like Youtube and streaming to get away from TV commercials? And then when ads came to Youtube and streaming (and the Internet in general), people started using ad blockers? I'm not sure what comes after the attempts to threaten and bully people into not using ad blockers, but I doubt it will be pleasant for anyone involved.

Ads are bullshit. They always have been, and they always will be. Find less obnoxious ways to make money, Internet.

A more appropriate headline for this article would be "A good reason to stop using Chrome entirely in 2023."

[personal profile] owsf2000's post, my comment.

The gist: mobile game-style commercials are apparently coming to console games now, which sucks the stinky shit straight from Satan's sulfurous sphincter through a silly swirly straw.

Welp, time to go back to uBlock Origin, I guess. Even though it wasn't (EDIT) and isn't (/EDIT) as good. *sigh*

Putting this here for future reference. Found it via Google's privacy checkup thing that they prompted me with out of the blue a few minutes ago. While I had nothing on the Google end of things[1], several 3rd party ad sites were apparently doing shit with my data, out of which I have now opted.

Thing is, though, even just using that opt-out site required temporarily disabling most of my adblocking shit, including NoScript, so it'd be just like it to have all been a scam of some sort that did the exact opposite of what it purported to do. We'll see, I guess. Oh, and it should be noted that this thing is per browser, and also requires allowing third party cookies, apparently, which was already set on Chrome for me, but which I did not change the setting to allow Firefox to do, so it apparently "failed" to opt-out of some things because of that, but it's more likely because I never allowed them to ever set cookies in the first place for most of them. Hell, even on Chrome, for which all of the settings were apparently ideal for it to run, 8 of the sites apparently failed to let me opt-out of whatever, which is kind of bullshit, I think.

In any case, all of this should be a moot point, regardless, given that I run various adblockers, anti-anti-adblockers, and NoScript constantly, aside from for a rare few sites that I've white listed on these. But then, those "rare few sites" is all it takes to get bad shit, I guess.

[1] - Well, it did find some Youtube search results and view history from pre-2015, but I've cleared all of that, as well. So now I should be, ostensibly, null and void as far as being tracked directly by Google, assuming Google is being honest here.

I honestly don't blame the advertisers. There are some incredibly shitty dudes out there (for example) putting out some incredibly shitty videos on Youtube, and if I had something to advertise, I certainly wouldn't want it being associated with that kind of horseshit, either. Google isn't stupid. Lazy, maybe, but not stupid. I think they'll (eventually) work it all out, whether it's through allowing more control over targeting of advertising or by removing the offensive content or whatever.

(Of course, the entire topic is completely academic as far as I am concerned, because I use uBlock Origin and NoScript and FB Purity and such to block all ads, everywhere, for a multitude of reasons I've stated in the past that I won't be going into at this time [and if you don't like that, tough fucking shit].)

(EDIT) Or, rather, it's not a new policy, but just one that finally hit a Youtuber with a big enough following to raise a bigger stink about it. Which means that lots of "little guy" Youtubers have most assuredly been having to deal with this shit for a while now. See also, #WTFU. (/EDIT)

Here is what they consider to be non-advertiser-friendly content:

Content that is considered "not advertiser-friendly" includes, but is not limited to:

  • Sexually suggestive content, including partial nudity and sexual humor
  • Violence, including display of serious injury and events related to violent extremism
  • Inappropriate language, including harassment, profanity and vulgar language
  • Promotion of drugs and regulated substances, including selling, use and abuse of such items
  • Controversial or sensitive subjects and events, including subjects related to war, political conflicts, natural disasters and tragedies, even if graphic imagery is not shown
If any of the above describes any portion of your video, then the video may not be approved for monetization. If monetization is approved, your video may not be eligible for all available ad formats. YouTube reserves the right to not monetize a video, as well as suspend monetization features on channels that repeatedly submit videos violating our policies.

Hell, the "profanity and vulgar language" thing alone would kill most of the Youtube channels that I watch, such as Super Best Friends Play, Cinemassacre, Channel Awesome, Angry Joe, Pat the NES Punk, etc. And the "controversial and sensitive subjects and events" thing is just way too fucking vague and broad to be useful at all.

Honestly, at this point, I'm struggling to comprehend why any content creators are still bothering to use Youtube at all, if Youtube is going to have this gigantic a stick up its collective ass.

My guess, though, is that Youtube will start backpedaling super hard over this shit over the next few days or so and that, ultimately, nothing will change from what it has been up to now to any real extent. In any case, I'm glad I already don't bother to host anything on there, even if I had anything worthwhile to host in the first place.

I just switched from Adblock Plus to uBlock Origin (not to be confused with just uBlock). I'm going to give that one a shot for a while. Reason: I was on a site that popped up one of those annoying, fullscreen "hey, you're using an adblocker, so we're going to fill your screen with shit until you turn off the adblocker" things. Adblock Plus wasn't blocking it, and I couldn't find a way to get it to do so. However, after switching to uBlock Origin, and then enabling the Anti-Adblock Killer in the 3rd-party filters (and after installing associated scripts for Firefox and Chrome), when I went back to that page, it worked normally, without the "fuck you" fullscreen blocker popping up.

So... yeah. If you're someone who currently uses AdBlock Plus, you may want to consider giving uBlock Origin a look.

So Blip.tv, the video player used by the guys on thatguywiththeglasses.com, recently instituted a thing where if you have an ad blocker installed, it will make you sit there for 90 seconds with a "Sorry, but because you're blocking our ads, we're going to make you sit here in retaliation" message.

So why don't I just turn off the ad blocker for blip.tv like Linkara asked? No, no I will not be turning off ad block. All it takes is one (1) ad spewing malware to screw everything up, and for me that one (1) time already happened back when Cinemassacre had an ad that contained malware. Before that point, sure, I was willing to whitelist some sites on my ad blocker, including cinemassacre.com and thatguywiththeglasses.com, but no more. So yeah, rather than sit through the inconvenience of a minute and a half of silence for every single video now, during which they're trying to make me feel like a scuzzy creep because I'm skipping their commercials, I've simply decided to just remove thatguywiththeglasses.com from my bookmarks altogether and just find my Internet entertainment from somewhere less obnoxious. Maybe if/when they find a less insufferable way to earn their living than by using video ads prior to and in the middle of their videos, I might go back and give them another shot. But until then, I don't feel like I'm missing out on all that much. I might be willing to sit through 90 seconds for the occasional Nostalgia Critic video or something, perhaps, but that's about it. I already haven't watched a Linkara video in months, honestly, or a Nostalgia Chick video for even longer than that, and beyond that, I never watched anyone else on the site in the first place (well, aside from Spoony, but they fired him a while back... and, hmm, I think that's around the time I mostly stopped watching videos on their site, how about that). Oh well. *shrug*

(EDIT) Since Channel Awesome apparently no longer uses blip (or, at least, Doug Walker himself doesn't seem to, and he's pretty much the only one I care about watching on the site anymore), the above issue is no longer relevant, so I'll resume watching at least the Nostalgia Critic videos and other stuff that Doug puts out. I seriously doubt I'll resume watching any of the stuff from the others I used to watch, though, mostly meaning Linkara and Nostalgia Chick (who isn't even with the site anymore anyway) and such, unless they happen to do a crossover with Doug or something. I don't know, aside from Doug and James Rolfe and Noah Antwiler and Matt, Pat, Woolie, and Liam, the whole "angry internet reviewer" thing just doesn't really appeal to me much anymore, in general.
