A post on John Scalzi's website, about how he is no longer using Twitter, because Elon Musk is an unwashed pubic hair. I mean, it's not like Elon Musk wasn't a rancid dickweed before this point, but apparently he hit critical mass as far as Mr. Scalzi's tolerance for bullshit goes.

As for me, I deleted all my Twitter shit ages ago (then remade it for placeholder purposes, then deleted it again, also ages ago, at this point). That said, I also have zero interest in Bluesky/Threads/Mastodon/Facebook/Instagram, either.

"Hi. It's Republican primary debate season! Ungghhhh.......... sfhkjsahvj...
Anyway, here's a look at some of the giant weirdos who think they can beat Trump and BE Trump and not inspire their political party to want to hang them."

(Warning: this video features not just one Warmbo, but two Warmbos. *weary sigh* And yet, either or both of those Warmbos literally would still make a better POTUS than any of the supposed humans discussed in this video.)

Truly, the fact that anyone would even want to be "the next Trump" is just depressingly mind-boggling (and also mind-bogglingly depressing) to me.

Yeah, keep right on riding that Trump Train, you disingenuous ghouls. Honestly, I hadn't even heard of half of these assclowns before watching that video, and now I'm just kind of almost wishing that I hadn't watched the video so that I could have continued on with my life without having heard of those assclowns. When Chris fucking Christie[1], of all people, is apparently the """""best""""" of that whole bunch, that just demonstrates how egregiously shitty and terrible that whole bunch is.

Also, I just have to say that "The end result of decades of dog whistling finally calling the dog," has to be one of the most succinct and apropos descriptions of the GQP, of Donald Trump, and of Trump's effect on the GQP that I've heard in a while.

[1] - I.e. Chris goddamned Christie, the man whose pretty much only redeeming virtue whatsoever is the fact that he is apparently the only candidate with a willingness to unequivocally denounce Trump for the con man, charlatan, and blatant, brazen criminal that Trump most certainly is (out here in objective reality, at least), unlike all the rest of those intolerably ludicrous shitbirds. And yet, as the video helpfully points out, Christie is still a raging dog turd in far too many other ways.

"Billionaires Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg agreed to a cage match in June, but news has been relatively quiet for the last month."

The absolute best possible case, here, is that they somehow manage to literally kill each other. Whether that's by accident, on purpose, or via a meteorite crashing into whatever venue they use to do this shit, I don't care which. An acceptable case is that one of them kills the other. While I don't like Zuckerberg either and would find him being on the receiving end good enough, I would rather it be him killing Musk than the other way around. The bare minimum acceptable case is that they just, like, make abject fools of themselves on stream or whatever. The worst case is that one or both of them chickens out before the event.

In any case, I won't say that this is the most asinine thing I've ever heard of, because, you know, Donald Trump exists, but it's still pretty high up on the list of most asinine things I've ever heard of. I have zero interest in watching this. At most, I just want a casualty report of the aftermath, fingers crossed.

"X user quits paying for Twitter Blue to protest X commandeering his account."

Yet another reason to never use XTwitter. Elon Musk can just take over your 16 year old account just like that, and there's basically shit all you can do about it.

Also, this guy was paying for Twitter Blue. For some reason.
kane_magus: (Default)

"This secretive new product 'X' sure sounds exciting. What ever could it be?"

I'm never going to call Twitter "X," similar to how I'm never going to call Facebook "Meta" or whatever.
kane_magus: (Default)
A post on Whatever by John Scalzi about Twitter"X."

I'm glad I abandoned that sinking, flaming garbage scow of a website a while back, regardless of whatever its name may be now.

Requiem in urina, Twitter. Manducare cacas et mori, "X."

"Maybe we just ditch the algorithms."

Yeah, people have been complaining about how much shit the newfangled Web 3.0 sucks, but as it turns out, Web 2.0 has sucked quite a bit of shit, too, and it's only getting worse. Like... there's a certain... let's say... enshittification... about the whole thing.

I definitely wouldn't mind a return to the days of, like, Usenet (or newsgroups or whatever you want to call them) and stuff like that. Seriously, stuff like Reddit or whatever is basically little more than just way shittier versions of Usenet. And remember forums (or message boards or whatever you want to call them)? Can we bring back forums, too? Or, you know, something like those things, without all the extraneous, superfluous dogshit that has become associated with Web 2.0 (and especially without the fetid diarrhea that is associated with Web 3.0)?

Sure, I'll wait for someone to get right on that. And then I'll wait for the inevitable enshittification of all of that, too. ¬_¬

"Bluesky is literally just Twitter. It's the same exact fucking thing," is decidedly not a ringing endorsement.

"Hi. In today's episode, we look at the hype surrounding artificial intelligence, the way corporations are desperate to use it to save money, and the theory among some rich people that it's going to destroy civilization."

Pretty fucking much, yeah. Basically, the problem is not so much LLM/AI in and of itself, but it is instead human beings and how human beings are misusing LLM/AI to fuck over other human beings. In other words, nothing too awfully surprising.

Here's some appropriate music to set the mood.

So, basically, what I take away from all this is that this report by John Durham, a Republican appointed as a special counsel by Trump stan[1] William Barr to "investigate" the FBI investigation into the whole Trump/Russia thing, can pretty much be safely ignored as the partisan dogshit it was always destined to be. What a shock, I know. *eye roll* I mean, apparently, Durham's conclusion was essentially "While the FBI was free to investigate Trump, they totally shouldn't have investigated him so hard." From the very start, this was never intended to be favorable to the FBI or unfavorable toward Trump.

In any case, Trumpanzees are just going to use this as more "proof" that Trump/Russia is a "nothingburger." Though, to be fair, it pretty much is a nothingburger, at least in the sense that Trump is ever going to face even the tiniest of consequences for his myriad heinous crimes. *weary sigh*

(I was kind of waiting for a Seth Abramson thread on this, but apparently he just used it as opportunity to plug his books again. I mean, good on him and all, because more people need to read those books, but I was hoping for something a bit more immediately relevant than that. Unless he's saving that for his Substack thing. *shrug* Oh, and speaking of Seth Abramson and Trump and the FBI and all that shit, I will just use that as an excuse to leave this here, yet again.)

(EDIT)

Also this:

I don't know what has become of CNN lately. They seem to have gone from mostly dry and boring to actively bad and untrustworthy. Basically, they are becoming the "fake news" that Trump always said they were, but mostly because they seem to be becoming explicitly more pro-Trump. I guess they're taking that guy's desire for them to "be more like FOX News" to heart. As far as this concerns me, I guess if CNN is becoming worthless shit like Faux Noise, that just means that I'll be refraining from linking to CNN in the future and will be seeking out more legitimate sources of news for any given story.

(/EDIT)

(EDIT 2)

Okay, it's not Seth Abramson, but here is a thread on the subject of the Durham "report."

(And reading only a few of the replies to that thread on actual Twitter makes me glad that I no longer have an account on that blazing trashfire of a social media website.)

(/EDIT 2)

[1] - At the time, at least, though Barr seems to have become a little bit soured on Trump these days. Not that that matters at all, as it's a textbook case of far too little, far too late, as well as textbook cases of backpedaling and ass-covering. Barr still deserves to rot in prison alongside Trump and everyone else involved in Trump's criminal dumbfuckery.

A post on John Scalzi's website.

(EDIT)

And here's another one, which I'm just going to stick here rather than give it its own post:
"Reader Request Week 2023 #2: The Future of Social Media"

(/EDIT)
kane_magus: (Default)
Excerpted from episode 797: What I Was Thinking As We Were Sinking of the This American Life podcast/radio show. (Here is a text transcript of the entire show.)

I listened to most of this (the Twitter stuff, anyway, as I missed most of the first part) on the car radio on the way home from the grocery store last night. It was with a mix of interest, disgust, and schadenfreude that I listened to the story of Yoel Roth and how he handled moderating the dumbfuckery of Donald Trump along with the eventual removal of Trump from Twitter entirely, and how, not too long after Elon Musk took over, Roth decided he just couldn't continue to bail out the sinking ship anymore.

Trigger warning: the audio, unfortunately, contains the fingernails-on-chalkboard voice of Donald Trump.

The little ditty at the end was pretty great:

Samson the Truest (SINGING) Listen up, children, and give your respect to this tale of a captain in another cursed wreck. Elon was his name, commandeering his game. He took over the ship, seeking only more fame. For his rockets and cars, he had tons of acclaim. But Elon wanted more and it ended in shame. Whoa, oh, oh, oh, oh, Elon wanted more and it ended in shame.

He dragged all the watchmen out from their crow's nest and forced them to walk down the lake to their rest, leaving no one to look out, no one who knew best. The ship fell apart in a watery mess. Whoa, oh, oh, oh, the ship fell apart in a watery mess.

"GLAAD noticed that Twitter recently removed a line in the platform's Hateful Conduct policy that forbids deadnaming and misgendering."

It has been almost exactly a month since I deleted my Twitter account. By that I mean the one that I recreated after I deleted my real account almost exactly a year ago. And in this past month, I haven't once missed it, even a little bit, and I just keep right on not missing Twitter more and more with every dumbfuck, hateful thing Elon Musk does with/to it. Really, at this point, Twitter's so-called "Hateful Conduct Policy" may as well just say, "As long as you're 'owning the libs,' it's all good, hurr durr, otherwise gtfo. *elon musk trollface*[1]" (EDIT) Or maybe that should be a poop emoji instead. It's still a highly accurate representation of Elon Musk's face, regardless. (/EDIT)

I'll just say it yet again: Elon Musk can eat himself (aka shit) and die.

(Oh, and I just found out today, via comments under that article, that Elon Musk apparently had a transgender daughter who has since disowned him. Gee I wonder why. He apparently thinks she disowned him because of "communism," though, because Elon Musk is a very, very stupid, hateful man.)

[1] - Elon Musk is like Donald Trump in the sense that it is seemingly impossible for him to take a photo that doesn't make him look like an utter dipshit. He, like Trump, has "resting dipshit face." And like Trump's, it is exceedingly punchable.
kane_magus: (Default)
Yeah, this seemed like a big enough Event™ that I felt like looking up the Seth Abramson thread about it, because I knew there would be a Seth Abramson thread about it.

(Pre-post EDIT) Here is a Thread Reader page for the below thread, if you'd prefer to view it that way. For one thing, it preserves the images and article blurbs, which the below embeds do not. The only thing the Thread Reader page doesn't have is my own aside about the #TruePunditHoax. (/Pre-post EDIT)

Because the threading is all wonky at the moment on Twitter, I'm just going to individually embed all of his tweets here:

Behind a cut, of course. )

If all of this ends up with Trump evading justice yet again and, worse, somehow becoming POTUS yet again, all this will prove is that justice is well and truly dead forever in the United States and also that there are still far too many braindead wastes of oxygen in the American voting public if anyone at all votes for Trump in 2024. But even if the best case happens and Trump ends up not only not POTUS again in 2024 but also in prison for what would hopefully be the rest of his natural life, the fact remains that he's already pretty much irrevocably ruined the SCOTUS for at least the next several decades. This has already happened, and as far as I know there's not a damn thing anyone can do to fix that grievous mistake.

Dropping this post here in the (unlikely) event that anyone reading it, now or later, may actually somehow care and find this info useful. I think the likelihood of me (re)creating an account on that cesspool of a website ever again is vanishingly small, regardless of whether it remains under Elon Musk's piss poor "management" or not. In other words, if you ever happen to see @KaneMagus on Twitter at some point in the future, just be aware that it isn't me, not anymore.

"Hi. The GOP has been in control of the House for just over two months, but all they can seem to do is promote awful legislation, hold performative investigations, and fight amongst themselves."

So, essentially, it's pretty much what everyone with at least two brain cells to rub together expected would be the case, then.

And, of course, yet more discussion of banal GQP whinging about "wokeness" in this video.

Also, those extended clips from CPAC near the end of the video made my arms tired, due to the sustained hoisting of double middle fingers throughout the whole bit.
